More is certainly at risk for Clemens, but I have no sympathy for him -- if he's guilty. My impression is that he's guilty, but I'd love it if he's not. McNamee's life has been ruined by all of this as well, although it's certainly self inflicted.
FOR ONE SECOND...LET'S ALL PRETEND ROGER IS TELLING THE TRUTH. Is this not insane? Having to go before Congress to prove up a negative..something you could never prove. No law enforcement body has indicted you. There's no proceeding for your attorney to cross-examine your accuser. There's no proceeding for a summation of the evidence by your attorney in your defense. Just the court of public opinion played out before the trappings of something formal in a congressional hearing. And all you can do is say, "i didn't do it." This is why we have due process in this country. I realize that nothing that happened today subjects him to loss of liberty. But his credibilty and his legacy are on trial before the public...the only jury that matters with regard to those things. And there's no process. That's what bothers me. It's not about defending Roger. I don't like Roger. It's about seeing a travashamockery.
That last exchange with Waxman was pretty evident that he believes McNamee and thinks Clemens did use Steroids and/or HGH. My question is that how is the guy that leads the hearing allowed to take the final moments of the hearing to "influence thinking?!?" Isn't that the same thing he chided Clemens on before the break? I don't think I blame Roger for lashing out, but I do question how it'll play out in public. If they're going to stake their whole case on Brian McNamee, I don't think the case will hold up in a court of law.
and if it were a trial, he would have been. and instead of speculating, attorneys on both sides could have asked questions. instead we're all left with questions.
Well they'l get their chance to cross examine in the defamation suit, no? If it even makes it to court.
absolutely. but that won't be nearly as public as this was. as you can tell...people have already made up their minds.
I agree 100%. And I also doubt his innocence What pisses me off is that we have 2 wars being fought (I count Afghan.), a struggling economy, a huge budget deficit, a weakening dollar, and a myriad of other problems yet CONGRESS decides to waste time with this crap. Un-*****ing-real!
But they aren't asking him to prove that he never used steroids - they're questioning him about all the things that don't line up right in his story or McNamee's. They've got two guys that gave sworn testimony on the same topic with very different answers. Both guys are getting creamed for holes in their respective stories, not about what they did or didn't do in the past. If this is about the greater point your making about this whole thing being a farce, than yeah. But Roger also brought that on himself a bit when he launched into his attack on McNamee after the Mitchell Report was released. Had Roger just said that he wasn't going to dignify the report with a comment, I don't know that we're seeing this hearing today. Maybe he gets called in like Andy, but if he keeps his statements close to the vest, they don't have this mountain of stuff to grill him over. Evan
What baseball player have they brought before Congress that they had actual proof/evidence on (besides what someone said)? Was it not a sham for them as well? FYI, I agree with you that it’s a sham. No one seemed to care until it was Roger though….
It was never about whether one player did steroids or not before. That's what today was about. Masquerading as a hearing on public health and protecting children.
