Maybe they were reaching here but I think I heard someone on the radio mention this as a theory: They said it is probably because the drunk is so loose and relaxed due to the alcohol while the sober victim who sees an oncoming vehicle panics.

Your attempt at sarcasm is pathetic and disgusting in a thread like this.

No one in the the other thread was defending drunken driving in any way.

Put alcohol sensors in all new cars & force bars to monitor how much they serve to people before letting them drive off. THAT will stop the DWI deaths & keep this trash off the streets.

    Wow.

And I post my reply about the sarcasm without having seen Fatty's latest...

    This should be good.

That is what i have heard as well. The drunk driver is all lose and gets thrown around like a rag doll while the other passengers tend to tense up and take a harder hit because they are completely stiff when the accident happens.

C'mon! There's no crying after football!

I've stated several times that I have zero problems with full enforcement if anyone is injuured.

I've also recently stated that I'm seeking a rational solution, considering the city isn't. Cry all you want, but I still don't see anyone balling up enough to [GASP] have public transportation after hours.

Ha! I'm not crying - just pointing out the irony of my post to Miguel coming on the heels of your Pee Wee post.

If you recall I agreed with you in part and understood what you were getting at even though many (like Miguel) didn't and took any response other than "blood testing is great!" to mean we were drunk driving advocates.

The two measures I mentioned above WOULD probably greatly reduce DWI deaths but then the argument is whether those measures are reasonable. How far is our society willing to go to combat the problem PREEMPTIVELY?

Mass transit is part of the equation, as well.

The sad thing about it though is that the city/county/state are more concerned with upping the DWI conviction rates with invasive "after-the-fact" measures than they are with taking a bigger picture approach to stopping DWI deaths.

I guess that plays better to the masses though - "I raised the DA's DWI conviction rate ___% through these measures" versus "I pushed proposals that would preemptively stop DWIs and the ensuing death & destruction."

Meanwhile families continue to get wiped out...

At the end of the day you could lower the BAC standard to .00000000001 for all it matters - and they might as well ('intoxication" being subjective & alcohol presence not even being a requirement) - and people will still get killed by drunk drivers, unless the powers-that-be start looking at proactive instead of reactive measures.

Last New Years, I heard the exact same thing happened to some local musician's in the Houston area. They were driving on Westpark Tollway when a drunk driver driving in the wrong direction crashed into them. All died on the scene.

    Here's some video of it:

    RIP

Safety mechanisms in cars are designed for head-on collisions (like a wall), so if you T-bone another car, that car gets the worst of it.

Traffic fatalities with large animals usually happen when people swerve away from the animal and hit it by the side of their car.

So if you're sure you're about to get hit, it might be safer percentage wise to drive dead on than to swerve away and get ripped to shreds by a larger vehicle..

Yep, this sucks and I hate to hear news like this. My grandfather was killed by a drunk driver before I ever got to meet the guy.

i agree, the more loose a person is, the more their body is able to absorb impact. where as if the body is tense, it will tend to absorb less force.

for example, of you punch a basketball, itll deform and them go back to its original shape.

but if you punch something stiff like a wooden board, either the board breaks or your hand breaks.

Refman, where did you read that the lady who died was married?!?!? ("a man has lost his wife")

    Silliest. Analogy. Ever.

Also, where did you get that his body was "loose"?!?!?

This is what I want to show my girlfriend. She parties way too much, and she thinks it is cool to tell people stories about how she was so drunk and she doesnt know how she got home. This is absolutely what I have been preaching to her........terrible!

I thought it was pretty much common knowledge that this is the reason the drunk driver is rarely hurt as bad as his victim(s)...

I always thought that drunk drivers are rarely hurt because they are often hit other drivers with the front of their vehicle as opposed to the sides. The most heavily protected piece of the car/truck... The limp noodle theory doesn't make much sense to me when "decelerating" at high speed.

That seems more sensible. Looking at the photo of this accident, if the person in the passenger seat of that minivan was drunk of his ass, it wouldn't have mattered.
