My brother is looking to join the masses and purchase an HDTV. I found a deal through fatwallet.com and just wanted to check with my clutchfans brethren to see if it was a sweet deal or not. Samsung HLT5087SAX 50-inch Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV $999.99 + free shipping (and no tax) Link to Buy.com deal Any thoughts? The only major con I could find was the bad viewing angle (as with most DLPs). Is there a reason why he shouldn't get this? Thanks, guys.
Also, there's a 5% off coupon so the final price comes down $984.99. Another con, according to Buy.com's return policy: "Due to manufacturers' policies, Buy.com cannot accept returns on this item for any reason. The manufacturer will handle all exchanges and replacements. Please contact the manufacturer directly and they will assist you with repair or replacements."
It looks like these will be the lowest size LED DLP sets that Samsung will make. Starting in April they will have the 61" and 67" LED DLP sets so maybe they're selling these at a lower price to clear them out before the larger ones arrive. It looks like a good deal right now...
Nice price. but be careful with DLPs. they are very particular in where you place them. you have to view them at almost direct eye level to get the best view. Also, they're lights don't last as long as others. So if you don't leave the TV on all day, and you're ok with the viewing angle, then that's a pretty good deal
I have 2 DLPs... one I bought in 2004 and the other in 2007. The one in 2004 - i haven't had to replace the bulb yet... I love both TVs - I used to have one at above eye level and it looked just great. Never had a problem with viewing angles...
I've got a 46" DLP I got from Conn's about a year and a half ago and it still works great, no bulb issue yet. I have noticed that bugs are attracted to the light that shines behind it so keep an eye out for that if you leave anywhere outside of the city.
I have a Sony 53" DLP that looks great. I haven't had to replace the bulb since 2007. This sounds like a good deal. It's a large enough TV to fill a wall, but I believe you can go bigger than that. Hey, man, thank you for the '94 Championship.
My recommendation is to stay from DLPs.... they are being phased out pretty soon (i know people who work in TV departments and managment, etc.) and they dont have the best picture quality. I recommend an LCD...
I've got a 50" Sony Bravia DLP, and I even have it up a little (about 5 feet off the ground), and I don't have any problem with the viewing angle even though you have to look up to see it when sitting on the sofa.
Don't worry...rebate check frenzy is coming up soon. Deals will live another day with all the financial doom and gloom surrounding the air.
