http://crave.cnet.com/ Too little, too late: HD DVD player finally breaks the $100 barrier The HD DVD fire sales have begun! Circuit City has the Toshiba HD-A3 for $99.99 shipped, plus 7 free movies (two in the box, five by mail). If only this had happened six months ago, it might be Blu-ray hanging up the gloves. So let's ask the obvious question: Is there any sense in buying an HD DVD player at any price? Especially this one, which tops out at 1080i? Well, maybe. There are already thousands of movies available on HD DVD, and countless more will likely filter into stores for the next couple months. So it's not like there's nothing to watch. Plus, it won't be long before prices plummet, so you'll be able to snap up some serious bargains. In addition, the HD-A3 will upconvert standard-def DVDs, making them look a whole lot better on your HDTV. (Just how much better is a matter of opinion, but it's definitely an improvement.) Convinced yet? Nah, me neither. But how long will we have to wait before Blu-ray players dip below the $100 mark? If you want super-cheap high-def movies right now, here's your chance.
FAOs, you are assuming that everyone here has 1080p TVs or are willing to do that upgrade. The HD-A3 upconverts great on a Sony XBR 1080p 52inch. I'm picking up a HD-A2 for $50 to replace my crappy Samsung dvd player. It is a good time to buy if you have a bad dvd player or if you want to get some cheap HD movies for your library. $45 for HD Matrix trilogy at Best Buy.
For $100 I may get two for my kids rooms. Does anyone have experience with these as an upconvert DVD player? Any problem with burned DVD's?
I have the HD-A2, it is a great upconvert DVD player. I have never had any problems playing DVD+/-R or DVD+R DL on it!
i'd jump all over it... These HD DVD's will be cheap as hell soon. I had a lot of great success when i had a laserdisc. I ended up getting some great titles for $2-$5...(star wars, indiana jones, etc)
Microsoft - HD DVD Player for Xbox 360 5-free movies $50 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...PGR&srccode=cii_5784816&cpncode=07-47188601-2
I would buy that if I had a 360, I mean, the 5 free movies even if you bought them as DVDs would cost more than 50$ lmao. Not to mention it upscales too! What a deal!
