Maybe now Paramount and Universal can finally get off their asses and release some titles on Blu-ray. They've all but ignored HD-DVD anyway ever since WB defected.
Great news for HDM lovers, not so for fanboys... I'm just glad I'm financially stable. I'm just glad it's over and can't wait to see the baptism scene in HD Glory... Damn Barzini...
HD-DVD had more classic films available thanks in large part to Universal and the WB exclusive titles(Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood). As far as video and audio quality, HD-DVD started out in the lead, but I think Blu-ray's made some amazing strides over the last year after abandoning MPEG-2 and producing more 50GB discs. The better format did win.
There will always be guinea pig buyers cuz SOMEONE's gonna buy products upon their initial release. Anyone purchasing electronics should understand this. Not so much that electronics is ever evolving and and always changing, but the more current rapid rate at which it does, that's become more noticeable to some some people. My big thing has been electronics and technology sometimes move way faster than the rate of absorption. Things like media are acceptable change to most but I dont think most people view their electronics as "disposable" so much. You can always elect to stay put and not "get with the times" but its hard to have gratification about purchases if they become outdated every few months. Even if they easily "could" I think alot of people dont necessarily want" to change their cell phones every other month. Just my opinion...its what it is and it will never change though... Nice that the format has been settled cuz I would have leaned toward HD DVD purchases more than a year ago. They said Wal Mart regressed as a retail giant but obviously it wasnt too much.
Thanks for me that is all that matters I think some said BetaMaxes were actually better than VHS but VHS just had more reach [I dunno . .it was before my time] Quality should win out Rocket River
So when are the HD-DVD prices going to start dropping? I want a bunch of cheapies while I'm waiting for Blue Ray to get to my price range.
Their decision by itself didn't cause Toshiba to throw in the towel, although it obviously didn't help. If you want to look at any one thing that ended the war, it would be Warner going Blu-ray exclusive. That's what set the blocks falling (Netflix, Best Buy, Wal-mart, etc.). Of course, you could even argue the war had a winner before it even technically began (Blu-ray would win out, just a matter of when). According to what I read at Wikipedia a while back, Betamax had better video quality but worse recording time. I remember reading something about how people preferred VHS since they could record a whole football game, which they couldn't do with Betamax (I think it could only record 60 minutes?). From that, I'd probably say VHS was the better format and deserved to win.
I got a Betamax player a couple years ago from my friend's dad for the hell of it, along with a bunch of old tapes with movies recorded on it. First thing I thought was this thing's heavy as hell!, the 2nd was the tapes not having that much content in them. So yeah that was the biggest noticeable difference... (& yes people, if you want Pete's Dragon or Beverly Hills Cop on beta, I do have them for sale. Before we head into the future format, let us experience the past ) Wal Mart comment was more how their moves still make big news. Their effect isnt so big if Wal-Mart on Monday announces going Blu Ray only that on Tuesday Toshiba drops their format, but like you said it surely didnt help matters for anybody on the HD DVD side
That's true. I certainly wasn't trying to downplay Wal-mart's presence in the market. By itself, exclusive support from Wal-mart a few months ago would have been huge news IMO, especially if they really pushed the format. It might not have ended the war (barring some other moves), but it would be pretty major, much more than any of the other news regarding retailers IMO (Blockbuster, Best Buy, Target, Netflix, etc.).
I was a kid when VHS and Beta were having their format war. I can tell you that early VHS players weren't exactly light either. They were big, bulky, and heavy.
I don't feel shafted either. The few HD-DVD movies that I own are still in HD, and I'll still be able to listen to them in dolby digital. I have a PS3 and although I have no intention of re-buying my entire library, there are quite a few titles that I don't mind spending the extra dough on to get the bluray versions. I still buy regular DVDs, albeit ones that are of the "Romantic Comedy" genre and they are usually purchased by the wife.
I also don't understand the whole, "Wow you must feel stupid for having a 360 and HD-DVD add on." HD-DVD is a good format. Some of the movies they have are great and I'll continue to buy them as they come out. Like someone said, it isn't like they aren't HD anymore. We still get the benefit of the format. I also love my PS3 and Bluray. I'm more glad that this is over so we don't have to listen to the idiots that get some sort of satisfaction out of one format winning over the other. You people need to lighten up.
Well, at least we can still download HD movies from the Marketplace. Or stream HD video files from your network or burnt disc. Sucks that there had to be two different formats of high definition.
same here buddy i;ll wait for a fire sale for hddvd movies anmd wait for the bluray player to drop price or a adapter for my 360 which ever is first!!
Bill Gates response to the end of the format war: "Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! It wasn't my war! You asked me, I didn't ask you! And I did what I had to do to win! But somebody wouldn't let us win! And I come back to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and I see all those maggots at the hi def exhibits, protesting me, spitting. Calling me format killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me? Who are they? Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about!" What an ass!
So I'm an "idiot" for being happy that I won't have to spend another couple hundred bucks on a hi-def player?
