well my investment went down the drain. At least i bought the 360 hd-dvd add-on this first month it came out. Well, time for the cheap movies waiting for me to buy.
Uhhhh yeah, so if you bought the 360 HD-DVD player youre shafted but at the end of the day you still have a 360. Just buy a BR player now. The only thing that sucks about this is manufacturers now have no inducement to drop the price of BR players. Don't look for a PS3 price drop anytime soon... At the end of the day regular old DVD still rules. In 2015 only a minority of DVD player owners will have BR. The vast majority of people dont want to rebuy their DVD libraries.
i don't feel shafted. early adopters are always the guinea pigs. I got alot of HD enjoyment out of it and Netflix. A high end regular dvd player will run you over $200. Electronics is something that will always change. its not like you guys are still playing your NES or Master Systems or Ataris (Well maybe some people) on your black and white tvs. big deal, we have to buy more electronics. why is that bad?
Generally speaking, yeah. Yeah, I'm sure companies like Samsung (who probably have an advantage when it comes to producing components cheaply) won't have any incentive to try and sell more Blu-ray players than companies like Pioneer. No price competition whatsoever between the companies (including the new guys from China IIRC...not that I'd want a Blu-ray player from them). The format war isn't the only thing that Sony factors in when pricing the PS3. As of now, Blu-ray has been more successful than DVD was in its early stages, and that's counting the hurdle that HD DVD has provided. It certainly too early to know how things will go, but I don't see why Blu-ray couldn't be really successful when 2015 comes around. Still love how people continue to throw out the "people don't want to rebuy their DVD libraries" statement as if it actually makes any kind of sense.
well if u bought it like within the last 6 months, yea u got shafted big time. I bought this like around thanksgiving for 200 bucks. I would say the player has worth the money and experience. Probably a year or so, i'll buy a stand alone blu-ray/hd-dvd combo player
It kinda makes sense to me, but for myself, I'd definitely re-buy my library. The difference in quality has to be seen to be believed... I do think there are more like me than a lot of people think. But that doesn't mean the argument doesn't make sense, IMHO.
xbox720 with blu ray? i can't envision them sticking with dvd for another generation, it's just not feasible.
I guess MultimMedia Compact Disc has finally been avenged. I'll wait til they stop trying to force you to pay $30 for a movie.
You'd rebuy your entire library? No doubt I could see myself rebuying some of the major blockbusters (LOTR, Star Wars, Aliens, Spider-man, Batman, etc.), but I wouldn't rebuy something like Knocked Up or Superbad. Great movies, but I wouldn't really care that much to rebuy them in HD (however, I'd lean towards the HD version for any movie I didn't have on DVD). I don't really think a lot of people would go out week 1 and replace their entire DVD library with Blu-rays. Maybe a percentage of their library, but not every single movie, which is what I was responding to. It seemed like a common argument early on that people wouldn't invest in HD because it meant replacing their huge DVD library; it makes more sense to me just for those people to rebuy the ones they really like, and then start buying new movies they like in HD instead of DVD. Amazon is your friend. Not that I wouldn't mind another $5 or so off the MSRP.
He's referring to the next Xbox having Blu-ray since DVD would be too limiting as a medium (probably for delivering games). They'll probably do that, especially if Blu-ray does take off. I could see them being stubborn and just modifying DVD tech for extra storage, or trying to push digital distribution as the only way to deliver games (might depend on when they launch though). To be fair, you weren't exactly going out on a limb. Blu-ray losing would have been a bigger upset than the Patriots losing in the SB.
Of course it wasn't going out on a limb. but some people thought that ridiculous HDDVD-Pr0n pairing would give them the upper hand. PREPOSTEROUS.
My "library" consists of about 20 movies, only the ones I really love. I only buy movies I can see myself watching over and over and over, unless i get them for under $5. So yes, I would. The great bulk of what I own is TV series sets, and I have serious doubts over whether some of them would ever come to Blu-Ray anyway (Highlander? Scrubs? Prince Valiant? ). I'd re-buy my DS9 and Band of Brothers sets, though. Those seem more likely.
