UHD is not a branch. It is a separate school. Go to a community college since it's cheaper and can the transfer credit hours. I wish I had gone that route instead of going straight into a university.

Trade School... makes you more money if you can manage yourself accordingly.

Also, good luck in UH engineering. I've heard that it is difficult - needlessly difficult. I think UH is trying to build a reputation as a top engineering school, and wants to do so ASAP. I've heard of people just saying f*** it and going to Lubbock to get their engineering degree after looking into UH's program.

Again, this is all second hand stuff I've heard, but still... good luck! Don't be like me and start off terrible in college and having to build up the GPA in the last two years.

100% agree with this ^^. I graduated with a BSEE from UH and let me tell you it was no joke. UH was/is trying to attain tier 1 status and due to this the program was pretty difficult. Getting in isn't a big problem but getting out (with a degree) is a complete different story. I have many friends who also did engineering at other schools (Texas, A&M, Tech, UC Berkeley) and most of them struggled with our HWs/Projects. I will tell you another thing, pretty much everybody I graduated with or I know who graduated from there isn't too happy with the school of engineering. UH is not really recognized nationally but it is in Texas. So, if you stay in the Houston area you should have no issues getting a job within 3 moths of graduation.

    Op,
Think of a community college as the 13th grade. Going there has advantages and disadvantages. I give you a few below.
    Pros:
    Cheaper
    Closer to home
Big fish in a small pond
Plenty of naive girls (assuming you are a dude and u like girls )

    Cons:
No college life/partying/school spirit/ bla bla
Closer to home (many people see college as a way to get away from home)
    GPA DOESN'T TRANSFER
Once you transfer you pretty much have to start over.. i.e make new friends
    No networking.

If you decide to take the community college route, leave a few of the basic classes for UH so it can help you balance out your GPA. If all you have leftover at UH is your engineering classes, trust me your GPA will suffer drastically.

    My .02

UHD is just part of the UH System, but it's not a branch. They are under the same Chancellor and Board of Regents but it's not a branch. UHD is a four-year public university with its own graduate and undergraduate programs. UHD isn't governed by UH's rules.

With that said, I believe that the cost is a lot more for UHD, but the classes are smaller and the professors will be a bit more experienced than the HCC professors. So the quality might be slightly better, but not by much. UH, on the other hand, is many notches above both UH and HCC, even combined.

Transferring doesn't take various semesters and you can transfer as soon as you want, but you must adhere to UH's requirements for admission, even when going to an institution before.

To be absolutely sure, please read each university's policies for transferring online or call one of their advisers.

Good luck with your education, young man.

Community college sucked, but I saved a ton of money before transferring. It does lessen the college experience when you transfer. I had a harder time meeting people since I missed out on dorm life.

My sister can attest to the fact that she had a poor high school academic career. Terrible scores on standardized tests. Went to UHD for semester, and got excellent scores..ended up transferring to a 4 year university...completed her MBA/MHA and now is making tons of money. Doesnt matter how u start, but matters how you finish!. Best of luck as you start your career.

You say you didn't get the requirements, was that to enter the engineering school or enter the school itself? If you met the requirements for UH, but not for the engineering school, then you can just enroll as a UScholar (unsure of major) and transfer within a semester or year. There's a lot of engineering kids here that took this route.

That's an interesting point. The OP should make sure he can't get into UH that way, although I suspect he can't, or he wouldn't have started the thread. Surely he's checked that much out? As for HCC, when my son was going to a magnet high school here in Austin, he was taking numerous AP courses and placed out of all sorts of hours when he went to an out of state university, where he got degrees in both Computer Engineering and Computer Science. The reason I brought him up is that while going to high school, he took classes at ACC during the summer, and that highly ranked out of state university accepted them. They were mostly in government and history, courses he wanted out of the way. The OP should be able to find out what HCC courses the UH/Central Campus accepts, and what courses UH accepts, but their engineering school does not. It would surprise me if UH doesn't accept numerous HCC courses. The OP just needs to do some digging, and ask both the HCC admissions office and the UH/Central Campus admissions office what is accepted.

I wouldn't bother with UH/Downtown, not if it is no longer part of the system, with the ability to transfer to other UH campuses with the credits earned. My opinion, anyway. Oh, and the engineering school at UH has always had a bit of a problem with their identity and self-esteem, in my humble opinion, and I say that as someone who bleeds Cougar red.

Does UH actually have a dorm life now? I know it's built up a ton since I went there but it was pretty non-existent back then. Two small towers made up for maybe 5% of the commuter school student body.
