It seems like this is more of just a difference in taste. As you pointed out the things he talks about haven't changed much (he does that because those are the things that everyone can relate to, gender/race issues) so other than delivery its hard for him to be that much worse. I like Jim Gaffigan (can make literally anything funny) and Louis C.K. but the other two on your list aren't people i would enjoy going to see. And for the record The Chis Rock show was MUCH better than the Chapelle show.
Hey, Joe Comedy, I like Chris Rock and everything, but to suggest that Patton Oswalt, or Louis C.K. are somehow not on his level, or, worse, not on par with Dane Cook (!) is just silly. A critique of somebody as not being any good because they are a "weird little r****d" says more about you then it does about them.
Above average show, nothing earth shattering. Did like the part about people being uncomfortable singing along to Dre, which I think everyone could relate to. For the most part, it's a lot of what we've heard before though.
Well, usually when a comedian goes on tour, they do the same material everywhere and add a little bit of local flavor to it.
LOL! @ people arguing about who is the best. It's all opinion, I don't think there are any stats that can show which is better. In my book, Richard Pryor is tops and everybody else is below but that's just my opinion.
Or maybe taking offense with it says more about you than it does about me for saying it. And for the record, I'm not sure where anybody is getting the impression that I even come close to considering Dane Cook a comedian. I just said he tricks people into thinking he's one because he walks like one and talks like one. But he's hack. I know, it was applied to Dane Cook. Exactly. Which wasn't even that funny. Exactly. Exactly. And this is where the difference of opinion comes in. You like those guys' style of comedy more than Chris Rock. Fine. I like them a whole lot, myself. But Chris Rock is a better comedian. He's been more influential to the modern state of standup. As an artist, he's outshined them. Now let me say this: I didn't like this new special. Not even as much as Never Scared. I hope the quality doesn't dip any further, or he's in trouble. Let me also say this: I like the guys you mentioned. With the possible exception of Louis C.K., who I'm just not that impressed with. I just don't think they do it on the scale that Chris Rock does. He has to reach so many people with his comedy, and sometimes his reach exceeds his grasp. But when he grasps an idea, he does it expertly. His comedic pacing, his persona, he way he walks the stage. Everything about his act is a show, and I prefer it to the "weird awkward white guy" style of comedy.
A few things. (IMHO) The whole "black people walk like this.." thing doesn't really hold that much weight when you factor in how many white comics do dysfunctional family material. It's a very fair parallel. Chris may have done the same jokes for three different audiences but it was an hour and a half show, and 90 minutes of new material is very hard to come by. Ron White pays 750. per joke, and that money might buy him a 3 minute bit. I liked the special because I like Chris Rock, but I didn't think it was his best effort.
chris rock brings EVERYTHING to the table. he talks about everything...a lot of comedians dont do that, because cant do it...im not saying that they have to, it's just that they dont. chappelle hardly ever talks about politics, but he's still good
I agree with you about how hard it is to hear some completely new material from any comedian. Especially 90 minutes.
d*mn . . folx PAY FOR JOKES Man . . . I thought P-Diddy having ghost writers was bad enough Rocket River
Different strokes for different folks. I believe their stand-up routines were completely different from each other as well.
Like Pun says. . . different stroke cause Richard was *purity* The best Comedian of all time for me I like Carlin even Cosby is underrated as a standup Rocket River
Yeah but I'm not taking anything away from Carlin because I like his work as well. Cosby is indeed underrated and I think many people in this generation no nothing or very little about his stand-up career.
