I think that every person they are trying NOT to be would say the exact same thing - that they have to sacrifice their credibility for the greater good. It gives that horriffic message: my greater good is better than your greater good, therefore I can make exceptions where you shouldn't. Who's to say Fox News isn't sacrificing their credibility for the greater good? Pretty worrisome turn of events.
chiming in to say I like this show, too. Well done, HBO. I have a prediction Spoiler at some point, maybe future seasons, Will will get fired in a setup, but then will start an Internet-based news show to loop-hole his non-compete that says he can't do TV for 3 years.
So do I. Yes, Sorkin's writing is very obvious is everything he's done. That's exactly why I like everything he's done. Sports Night was a great show. The West Wing is one of the best shows on tv ever (IMO). I loved Studio 60. I'm really enjoying Newsroom. I'm glad it's on HBO as it seems they're willing to give more latitude in regards to ratings and giving a show time to find it's footing. A network probably would have cancelled it by now, regardless of the quality.
I haven't had a chance to watch any of this show, but I'm intrigued if only because this show is so polarizing. There are a ton of people that love the show and are completely hooked and then there is an equally large and vocal group that can't stand the show or Sorkin's high horse act.
I think the show is entertaining (I watched a number of them in a row the other day), and I really like the Jeff Daniels character. I guess people with a more conservative slant won't care for it, since the point of view is clearly a liberal one. I don't think its anywhere on par with HBO's best shows (just got done watching The Wire some weeks back which was brilliant and on another level in its examination of failed American institutions). Still, I think its good TV.
I disagree. The beginning was clearly anti-Tea Party...not anti-conservative as Daniels' character was an admitted Republican.
He's a Republican, though at no point does he actually express a "conservative" position on the show that I can recall. He seems more like an independent, if anything, who has a strong dislike for the current Republican establishment. Also, it appears that every other character on the show is very much left-leaning. Hence, the staff's disbelief when they learn from McKenzie that Will is a Republican.

I'm tired of this thread about a great series is buried deep in the hangout... so I'm reviving it. They nailed that season finale. Extremely well done. That makes it a 10 for 10 for me... not a single bad episode the whole season.
I really enjoy the show, but I wish Emily Mortimer's character wouldn't scream and yell so much, and that Alison Pill's character didn't have to constantly brush her hair away from her face. Otherwise, it's groovy. More Olivia Munn, please. She's busy stealing every scene she's in, and I'm glad.
I like the show, but I felt like it got worse as the season wore on. It may have just been that the dialog started to annoy me. It's almost too witty and slick if you know what I mean. To the point where it was hard to take seriously. I guess that's just Sorkin.
100% agree with all of that. Actually, I 150% agree with the Olivia Munn part. There's no such thing as too much of her.
Is anyone else annoyed by Maggie? I liked her at the start of the season but now she manages to annoy me each episode because shes constantly getting into Jim's life, either get with him or not.
This almost as fun as going on Netflix and reading all the one star reviews for Roger and Me, All the President's Men or Eyes on the Prize.
emily mortimer's character is really the only blemish for me. i feel like another actress could do wonders for the part. too much screaming and chaos for someone who is supposed to have gone through as much as she has. would have loved to have seen what marisa tomei would've done with the role (she reportedly was the first choice but turned it down)
It's almost as if the propaganda is so loud that you can't unsubscribe from the channel and free yourself from the tyranny of Aaron Sorkin. The show is alright. The dialogue is what you get Sorkin and it's very, very self-indulgent. I won't lie: I enjoyed it on the whole, but it will be very interesting to see how the second season plays out after Sorkin fired the writing staff. I feel like everybody who watched the whole season should be allowed to vote twice.
I enjoyed the whole season. Very good season finale. If this is Sorkin's bully pulpit then so be it, he's knocking it out of the park.
Really enjoyed the season. Only major complaint was Allison Pill's character. That anyone as cool and laid back as Jim would seriously be that interested in a girl that is that unbalanced seems hard to believe, especially when he's got steaming hot sexpot Lisa already at his beck and call. And she seems WAY WAY less exhausting to be with than Maggie would be. Munn and Waterston were easily the best things about this season, though Daniels did a great job too. More Terry Crews, please. Definitely looking forward to season 2, though I desparately hope they focus less on the love quadrangle and more on the news stuff. Though it seems like there are not as many really notable news stories to cover between where they left off and when season 2 will start. I suppose they will focus a great deal on the election, but nothing else really comes to mind as far as big time country wide news stories. Might just be brain farting.
