I used to think TRF was amazing. Then I started hitting up the East Coast renn faires. I take no joy in reporting that the Texas renn fest absolutely sucks donkey balls in comparison. Hotter, more expensive, too spread out. Just bad all around.
But they don't care because the same people come back every year no matter what. So not much motivation to change. Kind of like Texans season ticket holders during the dark years.
A lot of my friends including band members are "festies" who not only go to the MN Ren Fest but perform there with some even touring at other Ren Fests. I've been a few times to the MN one but never went to the Texas one. Even though there's a lot of overlap between Irish music and Ren Fest just never really got into it. Some of y'all though might appreciate my costume though. To avoid "cultural appropriation" I don't dress up as Renaissance / Medieval European but have gone as a samurai tourists.
There also might just be something about Ren Faires and controversy as the MN Ren Fest has also been mired in charges of sexual harassment and financial scandals around the owner.
There are a lot of good Celtic musicians who play at them. Including: There's also a lot of this. NSFW!
