http://www.myfoxhouston.com/myfox/p...n=4&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=6.1.1 HOUSTON -- The representative for forward Chuck Hayes, a restricted free agent, tells FOX 26 Sports Hayes has agreed to terms with the Rockets and will continue his career in Houston. "We have an agreement in principle on a four year deal," agent Calvin Andrews said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. "I feel good about getting it done and I'm glad Chuck has some security," Andrews said. Last season Hayes averaged 5.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, and started 43 of the 78 games he played in. His energy and passion became an integral part of the Rockets scheme. Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey had said all along he was confidant he could keep Hayes with Houston. Since Hayes is a restricted free agent the Rockets had the right to match any offer Hayes received. "Chuck was a critical component in the Rockets success last season. With this agreement we are thrilled we will have Chuck as part of our core for some time," Morey said via e-mail to FOX 26. Andrews was also confident the two sides would get together. "It took awhile because the Rockets had a lot going on and we respected that and understood that," Andrews said. Andrews says Hayes will sign the contract either Wednesday or Thursday.
I seriously don't understand how one learns to shoot a FT with a ridiculous hitch like that. It can't possibly help, it seems and feels so awkward (I've tried shooting FT's like that, could barely get the ball to graze the rim), and it is not especially accurate. The only redeeming value is that it draws lane violations, but still, couldn't he shoot it without the hitch? Other than his shooting and his height, I love Chuck's game. We still need him on this team. He is a fine 15-20 minute energy player; he was far more efficient in this role in his rookie year than he was as a 25 mpg starter last year.
Paging Hayesfan. If memory serves me, didn't you mention Chucky actually had pretty decent offense in school? Was his reputation at Kentucky the same as it is w/ the Rockets now?
Actually, I think the hitch might help overall because of those lane violations. I don't know the exact numbers, but I expect he drew a lane violation on a missed free throw maybe 70% of the time. Just assuming that he shots free throws at about the same percentage on his first, second, and third attempts (61.8%) and the refs only gave him one retry, that would mean his real FT% comes out to be something like 53%. That's a significant boost. Would he be better off shooting without the hitch and forgoing the bonus freebies?
4 years? That's a bit surprising. I didn't think they wanted him THAT much. Oh well. The Chuckster is a good guy to have around.
LOL paging me? Here I am! To answer your question: Chuck was never considered an offensive juggernaut. But he does have moves that yall haven't seen that I was privy too in his college years. He was capable of breakout games where he would score 20+, but more often he would be balanced all around on his stats. In his senior year he was strictly an inside guy. Morris was always in foul trouble and the offense ran with Chuck on the low post. So he did develop some post moves around the blocks because that is where Tubby's offense expected him to be. He was stuck at the 5 because it was either him or Morris... no one else was left to play that position. Prior to that however, he ran the high-low with Eric Daniels and it was very successful. He isn't ever going to be a three point shooter (though he did take a few 3s his freshman year) but he can shoot 10 ft jumpers and make them fairly consistently. He didn't always play up at the top, but instead the two of them switched it up quite a bit. This was when he had the most successful offensive season. (that would be the 2003-2004 season) He really didn't get any sort of rep as far as shooting until his senior year, then everyone mentioned the hitch. He didn't have it his freshman year at all... he had it a bit by his junior year... and by his senior year it was evident. I don't know what Reggie Hanson did to his shot between his junior and senior year, but I wish I could take it back! I think in Adelman's offense, Chuck should be really good at passing. Especially to lead the break. He's very good and getting the ball on the defensive rebound or a steal and moving it out to one of the guards fast. Honestly, I don't think his shooting ability is going to be an issue. With confidence from the coach on his shot, you won't see hesitation and he will be fine. I am sure JVG told him, don't shoot unless you are under the basket or there is no time left on the clock. That's just the type of guy Jeff is... which is not bad for a guy like Chuck who is very attentive to what his coaches want. Adelman I think is more flexible so if he sees that Chuck can be utilized other than defensively, he will pass that feeling along to Hayes. Not that stats are everything, but here's his college info, if you scroll down you can see his stats game by game. http://www.ukathletics.com/doc_lib/mbb_hayesbio.pdf Wow this ended up being long winded.. sorry guys. As to the original topic, I am glad my stress level may soon be lessened. I was agonizing over the wait for them to sign the darn paperwork.
good to have the chuck wagon back. i would have to guess it was definitely lower than 70%. that would seem to be crazy, even for guys like shaq and hayes. maybe around a third of the time, which puts him around 57.8%, only a 4% boost. of course, for all we know he'd shoot worse without the hitch.
I don't know. It almost seemed like it was automatic last season -- if he missed that second free throw, he was going to get another one.
That's really good news, it would be better if we know the details. On one side, I really like Hayes, hope he got enough money for his hard work; on the other side, I don't want Rox spend too much money on an undersized backup PF. So the only thing I can hope is he have got enough money from Li-Ning
I'm now going to buy my #44 jersey. Should have gotten it last year but wasn't sure where he would end up.
