He does this regularly. It was nice to see him effectively slow down KG who is one of the few guys who he has trouble with but it he didn't do anything special tonight. This is what he brings when Adelman gives him minutes. Maybe the horrible defense over the last few weeks has made the casual fans realize that a player's value is measured by more than if he can dunk or not.
Landry is so bad on defense I am not worried about him starting....I would move him for a PF that can rebound and hit the 3 ball and is a bit talller and just as athletic. DD
That was awesome. The first time, KG tried to back him down, and the Celts announcer said something like, "KG, backing him down....can't move him!" and Garnett passed the ball back out. The next two times, KG stubbornly tried to back him down again, but got stuck dribbling in place before taking tough fadeaway jumpers. You'd think Tom Thibodeaux would have given KG some advice about posting up Chuck Hayes. To me it seems Chuck has a little less foot speed than last year, but is as tough as ever in the post.
Yeah, Landry got torched like 4-5 straight possessions by Garnett. Before that, I don't think Scola was having much success either.
Did the Celts announcer say anything else about Chuck? Unfortunately, I missed most of the game, but I think I'll catch the replay some time.
if only he has a decent offensive game..... defensively he is really a killer of opposing PFs.....he shutdown some top PFs, duncan, KG, bosh, boozer (last year playoff)
Chuck Hayes will never forget that. shut down kg 3 times, in one possession. hes a top 30 defensive player thats for sure. he can shut down 6'11/245lbs bigs. did it to lma, andris, now kg. too bad hes 6'6, thats terrible for him, but good thing he brings elite level defense w/ that short frame.
The real question is, how can you watch something like what he did to Kevin Garnett tonight, knowing full well you have seen him do it many times before to everyone from Tim Duncan to Amare Stoudemire, and bench the guy like you have been. Rick Adelman is one of the worst coaches in the NBA right now. I don't know if he is listening to his assistants or what. If The Rockets lose this game tonight, he is on the hot seat bigtime if you ask me. Almost every team in the NBA has a good to great Power Forward/Center, so there is no excuse for the Chuck Wagon not to be logging at least 20mpg. Personally, I would start him and play him for 7-8 minutes to open the 1rst and 3rd, then let him close the last 5 minutes of the 4th. They have enough scoring in the starting lineup, they need more defense. The Rockets have trouble scoring because of Adelman's ridiculous offensive schemes, not because of lack of talent. If he would run some Pick & Roll once in awhile, they might actually score.
If I recall correctly, they were very complimentary to all of Houston's power forwards. One considered Scola one of his top three favorite players in the NBA, and they also called Landry and Hayes a tough pair of power forwards to match up with.
I appreciated how Garnet totally disrespected Hayes' offense to trap the PG bringing the ball up. It forced the Rockets into bad offensive sets against the clock.
I would have to say top 10, if not better. If you watch him, he actually makes Ron Artest look like a pretty good defender instead of a Defensive Player of The Year. There are guys who are considered good defenders because they are athletic (Josh Smith, Dwight Howard), but when you flat out stop a guy like Chuck Hayes did to Kevin Garnett tonight, that puts you on an entirely different level if you ask me. Very rarely do you see an MVP type player like Kevin Garnett not be able to get the shot he wants. He got embarrassed tonight.
