Props for trying? Guy was a liar, and a thief, who lived the high life having stolen people's retirement and investment money, and was attempting to get out of being punished for all his wrongs by faking his death with what appears to be the stupidest plan ever. Props for being an evil jackass who will hopefully get what he deserves... much time paying for his wrongdoings in the most appropriately severe way possible.
Yes, I'm not condoning what he did. However let's just say you or me somehow found our way into his situation. Certainly unlikely as I'm sure both you and me as well are classy and accountable individuals. But again, if you were him and you knew there was a CHANCE you could fake your own death and get away with it, as dumb and as poorly planned as it was, wouldn't you try. You gotta believe he thought it wasn't that stupid of an idea and he believed he could get away with it all. You would do the same if you thought you could get away with it.
