My other wife, a professional lawyer who subsidizes my happily hedonistic lifestyle, agrees that JJ is a very smart player. His poor shots is not the result of bad decision making but just his declining atheleticism. Dumping the ball off to Yao off drives is not as easy as it sounds. The big man has the ready for the ball and opposing defenders have to commit to the driver. Again, credit the atheleticism of the Suns. Also, let's not forget the shot clock situation either. The Rockets make a point of milking every second on the clock - and sometimes for too long. At some point, someone's got to put up a shot w/o risking a violation. Even if JJ misses off of drives, he pulls defenders to create space for a Yao rebound. So says my wife. theSAGE
Haven did she notice that JJ is now starting to be just like the Guards? He is mostly refusing to pass to an open Yao Ming. Earlier in the season he was one of the most prolific passers to Yao!
no joke... i'm pretty certain JJ is the least of our problems. francis... twice victimizes defender into falling down... but how many baskets did he get off those moves?? still liked the moves... but baskets are what count
As a Rockets fan, I have to admit that Jazz under Sloan with Stockton is a very good team. I know lots of rockets fans hate Stockton, but his court vision, smarts, and decison making, oh boy, those are lost arts in NBA today, with those stupid highlights dunks.
Actually, that's exactly what I was think, and I made the same comments to my son during the game. I know many of you love the guy, hard working, etc. but IMHO Jim Jackson often forgot his role, over done his duties. Just look at his shots per game, I believe his shots per game is right up there with the big three's. I'm not saying JJ is the biggest problem, but he is far from perfect many here made out to be, and he did over done his role very often. That might explains why the Kings didn't keep him. BTW, Francis had a bad shooting game, but Mobley was plain stupid tonigh. Yes, he made some shots, but it is inexecusable for the guy to still play street ball out there at this time of the season. He need to be benched. --daoshi
Not dissing her or anything, but your wife is wrong. JJ has his nights when he takes some hard shots but tonight wasn't one of them, at least not in general. Think about this, if there are 3 seconds left on the clock when you get the ball because your guards can't cross the court with the press, who's fault is that? And when you do get the ball, how many options do you have? Well you have two: 1. Shoot the ball OR 2. Dish off and let somebody else take the blame. I'm actually impressed by JJ's play because he hit several buzzer beaters today.
That's gotta hurt, dude. A poster of Flopton in those nut-huggers? JJ makes his share of mistakes, and you----and your wife who loves Flopton in his nuthuggers---may be right about him. But the team has teased him for being JVG's pet. We are relying on him a lot this year, given the less-than-stellar production of Steve and Cat (well, they had been playing better lately, but not tonight). Maybe JJ has the green light because Steve and Cat are giving JVG 15 heart attacks a game until he can pull the trigger on them (so to speak) this summer?
Eh, quite alright. I agree with her now anyway, and you're perfectly free to diss me . I wish I had this on tape. But if memory serves right, I remember some bad shots. But regardless, I think people are misunderstanding my point a bit in this thread. I personally am not saying JJ's a dumb player. But I thought it was interesting that a basketball fan with no emotional attachment to the players thought so. And thinking about it, I think that there were certainly several head-scratchers today. I personally think I'm guilty of overlooking some of JJ's flaws because of his general consistent, veteran-style play. Maybe others are doing the same thing. *shrug* The play where she originally pointed it out to me, btw, was in the 2nd quarter when we were going through a cold spell. JJ was on the 3 point line, looking in at Yao. His man was fairly close to him. Yao had good position on his man, with at least one foot in the paint. JJ took the 3 and missed. At that point, she just said "gee, that was a dumb shot." After he did a couple of others like that, she said he was a dumb player. I don't think he's a dumb player. But I do think he forgot his role tonight and took some shots when he should have passed the ball.
Im not so suprised to hear that. I have been following Jim Jackson since his rookie season just because I have his rare Upper deck rookiecard which was worth $15 when it first came out. I have to agree with his wife that he doesnt know his role. He shoots up 10ft floaters, hook shots, and fadeaways time to time. He sometimes forget what his role is. It is hard to point at finger at him and blame for the loss, but that is not the point of story I believe. He does many great things and he helps the team also, but that also is not the point. The point is that he forgets roles and does things he is not supposed to be doing. I see this as Barkley jacking up 3s.. he is a good player but he shouldnt be shooting 3s too often. Lots of people disagree but we all know that he has been with so many different teams in his career.. i wonder why..
I tend to disagree that he didnt know his role tonight. With steve and cat throwing bricks and left and right, do you guys think jj wants to pass it to them so they can throw up another brick. If he wants to take shots that he is capable of making then let him. Of the 3 guards that took the most shots, JJ was the one who had the highest percentage, so i dont blame him when he is shooting the best out of the three.
When JJ is hitting, let him shoot at will. He can make several shots straight. He is a rythm shooter. On some nights, when his shooting is off, I do wish he shoot less and pass more. But compare with our other "shooters", he has more on nights than off nights. Only Yao gets my green light to shoot as many as he wants EVERY night! But the problem is he doesn't want to shoot too many. In this game, he had several possesions 3 feet inside the arc, and he elcted to pass rather than to shoot. I just wanted to yell at him "shoot that damn jumper after SF or MJ pass you the ball out of a double team. Take that 20-footer."
Good Move. (the thought of those pasty legs protruding from them short-shorts makes me wanna puke). Yuck.
I'm not sure how haven's wife is defining Jackson's "role"...is it to be shooting 48% over the prior 4 games but then to defer to Francis and Mobley who are having terrible shooting games? I realize JJax isn't Stockton but he still managed 8 dimes. Maybe if watched just a little bit more, she'd have seen that JJ was the one successfully handling the ball and making the passing decisions against the PHX press. It's probably just me, but I tend to think Jackson has learned a little bit about the game in his 561 minutes of playoff basketball.
