I happen to have a mid-sized dog that barks at passers-by, and an unlocked fence across the front yard, but no actual protection. It's unlikely that someone will try to break into my home, and more unlikely still that they'll try it when someone is home. So, I don't sweat it. If I happen to have the ill-fortune of a violent home invasion despite the odds, so be it.

Caught someone red handed in my car the other week.

When I realized they were still in there I flew out the front door towards the car and they luckily ran off down the road. I could have VERY easily caught them, but to be honest, I didnt think an 11 year old car was worth the possibility of being hurt for.

I used to keep a baseball bat next to my bed, I don't any more though. I figure if someone comes into my house while I'm here (And I keep an ear out for it all the time) I'll just beat them with my fists.

Hah, I didn't know that this thread would turn into a guns thread...

One day, I'll just work up the courage to go to the shooting range and get used to guns. I'm not a fan of guns but I'm a woman so I have to have means to defend myself and that's not my fists.

I'm thinking of getting a german shepherd dog but the hubby doesn't want a dog that sheds...are there any good & protective dogs with less shedding?

My cat sheds more than my Rott. German Shepards have much longer hair than Rotts too.

I don't think I want a Rott or pitbull...I don't want any lawsuit on my hands if my dog bites someone.

Doberman. Or even an English Bulldog. They're gentle as hell, but they still scare off intruders.

Rotts and Pitbulls are nothing alike. Do some research, go check out some Rotts and then make a decision. Also, German Shepards are almost always more aggressive than Rotts and why they are usually deemed better protection dogs. Rotts get a bad wrap because of how they have been portrayed.

Now it has turned into a dog thread.

Pits are good guard dogs if trained right.

ok ok, i should have said fiance instead! in my eyes, he's already my hubby. :p

Oh I didn't think of Dobermans...I will look into it. Bulldogs are ugly, though!

Yeah I've heard that German Shepherds are aggressive but the thing is that my family dog is half German Shepherd and he's soooo not aggressive at all unless strange people approach him. I'll do some research...thanks!

You may want to also consider a boxer, they're large with short hair and are generally friendly.

Pittbulls are actually great family dogs if raised as a pup around your family.. Pitbulls get a very bad rap because of bad owners, but they are without a doubt some of the most loyal animals you will ever see.

The cheapest thing to do is to secure your doors. Get long-throw deadbolts installed, as well as heavy duty strike plates. Use extra-long screws to install these, and also use these in the door hinges. Also secure your windows, there's a bunch of types to choose from.

My mother also has attractive lockable storm doors, that add another layer of protection. Those little chain locks people use when they answer the door are pretty much worthless. Now there are some storm doors with aluminum frames, impact resistant glass, and multi-point locking systems that look really sturdy.

It's hilarious how a Lady_Di thread automatically gets three pages because everyone on this board is still drooling over that Halloween photo.
