FVV being out changed the picture for Reed's development. He was supposed to be FVV's main backup and learn the ropes on probably about 20 mpg. Now Stone and Udoka have to decide whether to force a larger role on him or to find a stop-gap vet PG. Let's be honest, neither Holiday nor Okogie is a PG. Amen is not ready either. I don't think they will give up on him, like some kneejerk posters here. Just that the development strategy will have to be adjusted.
I don’t get this? He’s played two games, 24 MPG. What bigger role? His limited minutes have been a complete disaster. FVV injury has nothing to do with it. A #3 pick in his second year should give you at least something in his minutes. I wanna punch this dude, so infuriating…
I totally agree - they won't give up on him, but if he can't give the Rockets 20-25 minutes of decent PG play by the all-star break, I am expecting the Rockets to make a move for a veteran PG. I am not saying that they will trade Reed, just that they need a point guard this year to be a contender - they have everything else in place. I think Amen has underperformed worse than Reed in the first two games. I see Amen more as a Pippen type of player and I am not impressed with him as a point guard. I will give it 15-20 games, but my knee jerk is that they will be trading for a veteran point guard at the trade deadline.
Castle won RoY and Jabari never played as bad as Reed. Jabari - decent defense and 51.4% TS Reed - bad defense 46.5% TS The reason why Reed has so few minutes played is because he was god awful last year and only averaged 12 mins a game. Rox didnt immediately quit on him he saw 52 games last year. Why is it Rox fault if he sucked for most of those games and had to be pulled otherwise the team would lose? And Stone did give Reed a chance he didnt sign anybody else to be the backup. Ime playing him 27 mins first game and 20 mins last game. Who still playing bad? Reed at 35.5% TS now even worse than last year. The nets are a joke hopefully he can pump up his stats with this game.
Oh you never saw rookie Jabari play, fair enough. He was a HORRENDOUS defender who couldn’t dribble pass or shoot. You’re also missing the point, castle, jabari, and tons of other players didn’t get pulled no matter how bad they were because their teams were tanking, Reed is just in an awful situation for him.
I showed you the stats Jabari was never as bad as Reed. You are arguing against reality now? If Jabari couldnt shoot what do you call Reed who has worse stats than him? You are right Castle and Jabari never got pulled for playing bad, but my point is after one year the two of these showed drastic improvement. Reed is just too small the NBA is changing. Look at him in the Nets now even if he is shooting well he is still undersized and cant guard guys man to man. Everyone is sizing up Detroit, OKC and now even Nets have plus sized guards. Spurs have Castle and Harper who are both 6'6 pgs.
But they got over 3 times the minutes to show that they were decent. If you based their career only on the 1st few minutes they played, both would be out of the league. If you look at rookie jabari, his 21 games in march/april really boosted his FG% and TS% and all that, Reed has not come close to those minutes yet. If Reed gets real minutes this season, completely sucks like rookie jabari/rookie castle, that's one thing. But giving up after he's played basically between 1/3 and 1/4 of one season is insane. Jabari was also a WAY more damaging defensive player as a rookie than reed because he's a big. A big guy who's an F defender is much worse than a guard who's an F defender.
I get what you are saying however you also have to remember games played also matter. If I guy played 30 mins and only 1 game and the other guy also played 30 mins but in 3 games who had more looks and chances? They played the same amount of mins but player B had more chances to show out. Regardless how many total minutes Reed had he still played in 52 games and had 2 full offseasons by now. Theres no excuse for playing bad if you compare him to Jabari and Castle.
Ya saying that the minutes don't matter is an extremely dishonest and disingenuous way to view things solely because you hate a particular player. You're basically saying it makes no difference between playing 30 minutes in a game and play 5, which is obviously asinine and you know it.
Did Reed play just 5 mins or did he play 12 mins for 52 games? You act like he was Darko Milicic you are the one who is disingenuous like when you said Jabari had a worse rookie year than Reed when stats show otherwise. My example had two players with the same minutes and your reply is 30 mins and 5 mins? Are you trying to be the 2nd BTG? BTW Reed shooting 25% against the lottery Nets. But go on keep making excuses.
But your example isn't what happened. Jabari played meaningful minutes his rookie season (i would define that as 24 minutes, half the game) in 71 games. Reed had 4 games like that. In 21 of his 52 games he had single digit minutes, which is basically nothing. The stats don't actually show jabari had a better rookie season, he had a -3.7 bpm, -1.1 vorp, 0.037 ws/48. Reed was -1.7 bpm, 0.1 vorp (actually positive) and 0.055 ws/48.
Rockets were tanking during Jabari's time, so obv the metrics will be bad. Rox were 2nd seed during Reed's time, so the metrics will be better. Jabari had Silas as a coach while Reed had Udoka as coach. Big difference. For example look at Sengun's advanced stats from the last tanking year to the year they went 0.500 (2022-2023). His BPM went from 1.4 to 4.9 and all his advanced stats skyrocketed 2x or more. This wasnt his all star year either but his BPM tripled? All his advanced stats took a major leap when he went from Silas to Udoka and had FVV and DB: https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/sengual01.html If you look at what both oroduced though Jabari was just better both offensively and defensively.
This is his first year considering he either barely played last year (blow out games without starters) or only during garbage time. So this is his first real season. He has good hands and it’s clear he can shoot from deep. We just need his game to slow down and he will be solid for us.
You don't think sengun improved? That's a weird take. Silas is also a waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better offensive coach than udoka so on that end, jabari had a massive advantage over reed
Sengun improved but did he improve 3x the year he got better teammates and a better coach? Thats what his advanced metrics show lol. Look man keep leading the Reed hype train. So far out of all the pgs both Rox and Nets rosters have Reed is clearly the worst one.
