I don't know if they decide that looks don't matter at all. Perhaps as we women age we realize the reality of our situation - that we age poorly compared to men. Men can easily upgrade to a younger model, especially if they're successful, desirable and get lots of attention from other women. It makes complete sense to want to secure a long-term partner before noticing the ravages of time staring back at you in the mirror. My 38 year old knockout friend just got engaged to a pudgy, balding man, but at least he knows she could do way better than him and therefore treats her like a princess. She has dated several hot, successful men who all eventually let her down. She wants to settle down, she wants to start a family with a dependable man...so she did the realistic thing and settled for someone not-so-great in the looks department so she can ensure he will be around for her and her kids until death do they part.

It seems common sense to me...if you sacrifice looks, you'll probably find a better personality...and perhaps a more loving/committed partner. Goes for both men and women.
