Mine is stupid in retrospect, but when I was a teenager, 15 years-old I think, my father, step-mother and I flew to New York City for a vacation. I'm not the best flier anyway. I've always been unreasonably nervous on airplanes, so when I heard a loud bang and the plane got noticeably quieter and seemingly slower, I was pretty sure there was a major problem.

The pilot got on the loudspeaker and told us we were going to make an unscheduled landing at the closest airport, which made it sound to me like the problem was really major.

And all I could picture was us not making it to the airport and ending up in a huge ball of fire in some field somewhere.

I must've looked panicked, too, because the little girl who was sitting next to me (who was all of maybe 6 years-old at the oldest) tapped me on the arm. When I turned to her, she looked up at me and said "You can hold my hand if you're scared."

Back in high school, the video store where I was working was held up at gunpoint by a guy who, I later found out, was high as a kite on cocaine. I was the only employee in the store at the time. Having a gun pressed to your head while a guy demands money is a rather sobering experience.

Needless to say, that was my last day working there.

During the Persian Gulf War in 1990, we had scuds landing 5 min from my house. I was only in first grade, but it scared the **** out of me. Having gas masks on, bomb raid sirens all night...the ground shaking, and loud ass booms. Scary times.

When I first started high school cross-country, I jogged 10 miles with our fat coach driving a van and throwing water bottles at us. It reminded me of that "Punch-Out" scene when Mac in his pink jumpsuit was runnng in front of Doc was bycling. When I got back to school, I keeled over the pavement like a paralyzed snow angel and all I could think about were whoppers and ice-cream.

    Mmmm...whoppers and ice-cream

during scuba diving training, i had a scary few moments.. it was probably my 4th dive ever in a non-swimming-pool, the visibility was already about 5 feet (not very good at all), the water was pretty damn cold.. and my mask was filling with water. Anything I was doing wasn't getting rid of it.

I tried to open my eyes through the water to signal others and tell them I was jacked...but it burned too much after a few secs and I had to close them. So I was blind, underwater around 70 feet, and I couldn't tell if I was popping to the surface (which means you're in trouble) or sinking to the bottom of the lake--about 150 feet.

Luckily about 30 seconds of freaking out passed before my roommate came in and grabbed the hell out of me.. let me know I was under someone's control. He and the dive master couldn't make my mask work out right (turns out it wasn't sized properly), but they got me to the surface at a safe ascent rate while I couldn't see a thing.

It sucked.. but going through difficult situations (that along with getting my regulator kicked out of my mouth on my first dive) really made me comfortable diving in the ocean. I feel like anything can happen now and I'll be able to deal with it

Newport Beach, California - 1987. I was on my senior trip body surfing and a HUGE wave tossed me upside down and I had NO idea which way was up. I reached up to stick my hand out of the water (I thought) and it hit the sand. I was completely backwards and being pulled out into the Pacific quickly.

I managed to dig my hands and feet into the sand and wait for the water to recede enough to get a breath, but another wave hit me...hard. I thought for sure I was done. When I crawled back onto the beach finally, I just laid there for a while coughing and shaking. It was terrifying.

17 tubing on the guad (drunk on found beer), went over one of the falls and the water hit the back of my tube and flipped me over backward, i hit my head on a rock and lost all my air, i kept trying to come up but the water kept pulling me down, just when I thought i was going to die i got hit by someone else taking a spill and it knocked me free.

1 - as a kid i was pushed into a china cabinet by my brother and slit my wrist lengthwise very deep. the blood that came out was so freaking dark. i just started panicing (hell, I was only in 5th grade). luckily my brother was a boyscout and knew how to dress the wound really well, otherwise i would have bled to death.

2 - i was walking home from a convenience store late one night with a friend of mine and this small red coupe pulled up next to us. someone rolled down the window and asked us if we wanted to buy some weed. we said no. apparently no wasn't an option, because just then like 6 really large black dudes piled out of that small car brandishing knifes and guns. we got mugged with guns to our head. terrific.

The two that come to mind:

-In the 90s was dating a girl who was getting a divorce. I was staying the night with her one night and her husband drove by her apartment and shot the place up. I was pretty sure I was going to die.

-In 2002 my buddy and I were leaving this after-hours club and he decides to give this straight thug a ride. This guy was seriously gangster, and I don't know what my buddy was thinking (I think this guy had promised him some women or something). My buddy had this little truck and instead of riding in the cab with this guy I decided to ride in the truck bed. This guy wanted a ride to this bad part of town. About 20 mins in to the ride I told my buddy to pull over at a gas station, that I was going to be sick. They left...and when they came back two hours later, my buddy asked me to give the guy some money for a cab. So I gave him $20 and the gangster went to the bathroom. As soon as he was in the bathroom my buddy told me to run to the car and we booked it out of there.

It turned out that my instincts were right- the thug had pulled a gun on my buddy after they left me. My buddy convinced the guy that he was ape**** crazy, pulling out his military discharge papers and waving them around and raving about the gulf war and all sorts of stuff. He had finally convinced the guy with the gun that I had all the money and to come back to the gas station and get some from me. Luckily it was a well lit super busy truck stop so he had nowhere to rob and do whatever to us. I guess I could have left the gas station when I got dropped off, but I'm a loyal guy and wanted to make sure my friend was alive. I've never been that scared in my life (up until my son had to go into the hospital at a week old). I actually gave up partying for six months I was so freaked out. I'm sure that if I hadn't played my cards right in that situation I would have been shot.

I started a thread like this a few years ago and there were some pretty gut-wrenching stories. Here’s mine:

I worked at a bank in New Caney (of all places) for a short time back in 1999. It was Halloween week and earlier in the week, some people from corporate came into the branch wearing costumes and handing out candy.

So on Friday of the same week, no one really reacted when a guy came in wearing black over-alls, a weird Ronald Reagan mask and carrying a long black umbrella – that is until he started yelling for everyone to hit the ground. Turns out the long umbrella was actually a long rifle.

He jumped the teller stand and went straight for the only guy – me. He grabbed me in a headlock and put the rifle up against my right temple and told everyone to put the money in the bag or he would kill me and not to “put any ****ing dye-pack in there either!!!” One of the chicks fainted and that seemed to really piss him off, as his grip around my neck tightened. It was at that very moment, I knew I was going to die.

This happened on a Friday and I went back on Monday, but never went back after that. To this day, I will not go into a bank lobby. If I have to go to a bank at all, it’s strictly drive-thru.

I just want to say that y'all's stories are crazy!!! But yes, the airplane one made me laugh too...sorry. And I think everyone in Houston has had a similar Waterworld wave pool incident.

I always worry about drive through ATM's at night, b/c I figure someone can easily be hiding behind some bushes and carjack me since they know I definitely have some cash.

Nowadays most Washington Mutuals have those bullet proof glass barriers between the tellers and the customers. Some I have been to even have metal detector machines at the front door.

That's funny- something similar happened to me with comic books. I had to go to the flea market in Pearland when I was a teenager because that was the closest place to my house to get comics. I was driving home to Alvin reading a comic I was excited about and looked up and saw stopped traffic. I came within a foot of slamming into a car in front of me. Wasn't a near death thing, but damn was it stupid. We do some really dumb sh!te when we're young.

ah, the traffic circle in Waco!!! :)

I was in a car coming off Valley Mills headed north on I-35 when some punk threw a huge piece of concrete off the overpass down at our car. I saw us heading for it and it heading right towards me in the passenger seat. I didn't have time to think I was gonna die, frankly....but my friend slammed on the brakes and it ended up crashing into the grill of his car. scary stuff.
