I think its a bit of both. My brother and I have the same size hands but I can manage to palm a basketball and he can't. I can't get any sort of "iron grip" on it but enough to serve its purpose.

Can't dunk anything. I'm 5'8", was able to touch and hold on to the rim in high school, but that was about it. The rims at the Toyota Center seemed a lot lower when we played a pickup game there... maybe 'cuz it's so HIGH up onto the ceiling.

Now, let's talk about my D... SwoLy-D'fense... that was my bread and butter...

    My story is basically similar:

5'9", white guy. Could dunk in high school (I'm 24 now), but putting on weight in college has diminished my vertical by a bit.

I'm going to try to cut the weight and get back my athleticism though. I think basically every 6'0" tall person has the potential to be able to dunk if they get their body right. Get a good, solid core, and work on compound, explosive exercises (squats, deads, etc). It's no coincidence that powerlifters have some of the most freakish verticals out there, and I'd say, on average, professional football players have higher verticals than basketball players.

I was the OTIS THORPE of my family. No one could stop my PALM-THEN-DUNK under the lower-than-10-feet rims; I am taller than my 2 older brothers.

Maybe it had to do with a lot... umm... stretching my fingers... yeah, that's it... stretching my fingers... ;)

Dunking on one of your many Mexican cousins off a bicycle rim nailed to the garage doesn’t count.

Keep your love life away from this thread cabron.

6' and never dunked. This may sound weird, but... I don't think I know how to jump.

I mean, I know how to jump, but I don't think I know proper form for getting the best vertical out of a jump.

I was never timed in a 40 yard dash, but I am pretty confident that I could have run it under 4.7, maybe even 4.6. Now, I am basing that on my best 100m time which was 11.26 which I ran my senior year in high school. Of course, that was back when I weighed 150 pounds (I was extremely skinny for my height).

About that same time (which was my senior year in high school), I could dunk a nerf football on a regulation goal but that was the best I could do. Despite being 6'2" (almost 6'3") and having long arms, I never learned how to jump off one foot (thus a reason why I never could do the high jump or learn to become a great hurdler) nor could I palm a basketball. I also didn't lift any weights back then which I think would have helped me tremendously in raising my vertical. I could always get a lot of the rim but that was about it.

Now I'm 35, weigh a little over 200 pounds, and have bad knees. I can barely touch the rim - it's pretty sad. :(
