im 5'9 but i can do all kinds of dunk... windmills, tomahawks, 180... but it also helps im a k-state football player... GO WILDCATS
The first time I grabbed the rim, I was 17 years old and that was a couple months before a partially torn ACL. After I had partially torn my ACL I was worried that I would have lost my athletic ability. However, I dunked for the first time eleven months after the injury on an alley-oop. Like most posters, I am unable to palm the ball. It is easier for me to dunk on perfectly thrown alley oops, because I don't have to worry about grabbing the ball while preparing to jump: I can just jump catch the ball with one hand above the rim and dunk it. I am 22 and around 5-9 and don't play basketball anymore. I can still touch the rim comfortably, but because I don't have as much enthusiasm about basketball anymore, I do not spend hours any more trying to dunk. Some people don't believe me when I say I once dunked. That is quite understandable because prior to my first dunk and after my knee injury, it seemed so hard for me to dunk. I surprised even myself with my increased hops after my injury. I wish I recorded my dunks, like CCR.
I am 5"8" and ran track in college for 3 years, so from age 19-21 I could dunk on an open goal, but only got 1 dunk in a pickup game, I caught a rebound and stuffed it home one handed. Being the only white guy in the game I got quit a cheer form everyone in the gym! 10 years later I can barely grab rim...lol
I literally just did a fat cuff dunk. First time in my lifethat I cuffed it and threw it down.........
It seems as if everybody's story is the same: 5'9, can't palm the ball, could dunk with one hand, got older and have less hops than before.
Pretty much the same here. Ran college track for 4 years and during that time I had the hops to get up there but now can't. What events did you do in college? My body is basically shot thanks to my track years. Two injuries that never healed properly....
yeah im 6 ft 2 inches and i got pretty good hops i can dunk pretty easily but i have never dunked on anyone ...yet...
Yes, but not with my head above the basket like they do today. I could jump, catch the rim with both hands, and and do chin-ups. I have about a 1 inch vertical now. If you think Francis' athleticism has declined, you should check me out. Amazingly, I can still shoot accurately, but that is about it except I can make free throws better than anyone on the Rockets, and that is sad.
nope, havent been playing ball that long... about 2 years but im 6'2" standing reach of 8' but i can only get about 2 inches above the rim... which means my vertical is 26". i dont have the fast twitch muscles never have... was always a long distance runner. im only 21 so im still going to work on it til i can dunk that b!tch.
not me. I have been 5'10" 190 lbs since I was a freshman. I have never dunked a regulation basket. I barely grab net. lol. I can dunk an 8ft-9ft goal!
I'm 5'6" and have t-rex arms (standing reach of less than 6'6"), and when I was college I could grab the rim. I've about 60 pounds heavier than I was then so my vertical is about 12 inches now.
This is advice I agree with. I added 3-4 inches of vertical in a summer back in high school with no use of weights. All the excercizes I did used only my body weight. Repeated jumps- both quick twitch repetitions and full max jumps and calf raises was pretty much what it all boiled down to. I'm 6'0" barefoot and worked on my vertical to win a $20 bet to see who would dunk first. I dunked my Junior year the first time. Come my Senior year I dunked a few times while playing in games. My favorite was just a simple one hand put down. It was great because I went right over the defender on the break to do it. I maxed out at about a 36" vertical. Since then a dislocated shoulder and 3rd degree ankle sprain kept me off the court for about 2 years (never knew they came in degrees before) and I don't get to play much anymore. I can still grab the rim with both hands at the age of 27 and if I started being active I could get it back again. You know... he still owes me that 20 bucks.
I'm 5'8 and at my peak had about a 34' vert, probably more like 29' now. I can't jump off one foot like the track guys, I can only jump off both feet. I've come close on a couple tips but never in the open court. It was my goal to play a bunch and train to be able to do it but it looks like I won't be able to get there. I'm on the wrong side of 25 now. I was always hoping to say that at a short 5'8 and white, I could dunk. Oh well.
yeeeeep... I'm jealous of Yao's hops now. Also, ClutchCityReturns is the only one with any actual proof of themselves dunking. All the rest of us could be lying our butt off
Start off with a two foot jump and as soon as you land immedietly launch yourself back up using only your calf muscles. Bend your knees just enough to keep from injuring them when you land. Then do another set focusing on your upper leg. Try to keep your calves rigid and put more bend in your knees to thrust with the muscles in your thighs instead. Another that I liked isn't quite as fast paced but gives a great leg workout and that is to start in a kneeling position on one knee or have one foot raised up on a jump box or even a chair. You launch yourself with that one leg and then come down into the kneeling position on the opposite leg and then repeat. Switching each rep to the other leg. If you haven't done this type of exercise start with a set of 10 and gauge from there. The first 5 seem simple but they can start adding up after that.
