Nice post. Of course fans follow players they love if they go to another team. If they go from one NBA team to another it can be pretty tough when they play against your home town, because you gotta pull for your team. This isn't the case with Yao. He's here from the far side of the world... making new fans for the Rockets and the NBA. The longer he plays for the Rockets, the more his fans from China and Asia will come to be fans of team, not just the man. Long time fans like myself welcome all the new followers of the Rockets... but if any of you happen to be wealthy, toss something in the tipjar. Clutch is having a time handling all the internet traffic. Donate to the Clutchcity.net tipjar here!!! http://www.clutchcity.net/tipjar.cfm
sweet, slip in that tipjar plug.... btw..to all new Rocket's fans, you dont have to be wealthy to donate...it's easy to do and it will help ensure that cc.net stays operating for us all to enjoy. /on-topic Im a little confused why the noob is getting slammed, are the ones slamming her from that other site and are irritated that she is making them look bad? /and really on-topic You can go look in those old threads if you wish, my support of the Rockets taking Yao with the first pick is well documented...especially after seeing the clips of him that were circulating before the draft.
It's understandable to have yao-only or francis-only fan. For us out-of-towners, heck, 'out-of-countriers' who love bball, which team do we root for? By city? By player? By franchise? I'd think it's a combination of all these. As long as we all want the team to win as much as the player to succeed. Of course, it's not nice to want your fav. player to put up big numbers at the expense of the team or bash whoever criticizes him. I used to be a grizz. fan and was so excited when they drafted Francis, only to see him demanded his way out to Houston. But when the franchise fled.. moved to Memphis, i lost my loyalty to the team. While my fav. playe is Shareef, I'm still a rockets fan, largely because of the dynamic duo of Francis and Yao, and that the team can only go up. When the rockets play the hawks, i will wish for the team to beat the the hawks big time.
Slam? Nah... I just think it is rather rude to go to the this site and push the other site down like that especially the quote about English language skill is rather un-called for, in my opinion. (besides the motivation of insulting the other site is very questionable.) I am the member of both sites and I like both. The sites has different aim and different groups of people plus I know what is going on, So I am defending it a bit. I would do the same for this site too. Let put it to rest! I think that whatever he/she was doing at the other site is not very interesting to the member of this site. I would not mention it anymore. As a member of this site, I am welcoming him/her. I hope he/she will have a good time here.
On the topic! It is annoying when people start labeling others as such and such-only fan. Yao's fan got slam a lot around here while the person who slam them might be a ...(fill in the blank)-only fan themself if they used the same criteria of labelling. To me, most of out of towner must start from liking one or more of the rocket's players at some point (esp Hakeem'era). Then they stuck following the rocket. The same situation is occuring with Yao or Francis. Yao is more pronouced because he attract the new group of people from half of the globe away. Of course they would cheer Yao but they are cheering the rocket too. I think it is too early to say that who will continue to follow the rocket after Yao era and who will not. Thus grouping the new commer as Yao-only fan in the discriminated tone is rather harsh. I do not think that the general rocket fans at this site and in Houston want to make new Asian fans feel unwelcome. Isn't the more the merrier? I might be wrong. How should I know? I was labelled as a Yao-only fan and take that status proudly.
Never a hater but I'll admit I was a huge doubter. I was very skeptical of the CBA's competition in which he played against and of his body structure. I became a Ming fan the moment he was drafted as I support anybody who suits up for us, but I didn't start believing in him until I think it was the Mavs game where he blew up.
Yao hater? Can you even name one on this board, who speaks negatively about him on a consistent basis?
I was high on this guy six months before the draft. I remember talking to my brother about him ( I won’t mention any names *cough* RocPaint ) and he thought I was crazy. Needless to say, when the basketball gods granted us the #1 pick, I knew this team had the chance to become something very special. We are very lucky. ( btw, get off the board and give me a call bro )
i hate YAO MING A LOT. because of that b*stard, i can't go to basketball games anymore without people assuming "stupid yao only fan". i stopped going to nba games the second yao ming was drafted, cause i knew there would be idiots out assuming r****ded yao only fan(even though i've watched basketball years before i even knew about yao)

sup all, first post... thought I'd add my two cents I am a yao fan...and also a long time bball fan. Yeah I'm asian and I started following the rockets in earnest because of yao...I think most casual fans are drawn to the game by the players not so much the teams... Celtics are my home team and I've followed them my whole life but I rooted for Houston during the championship years because I loved Hakeem and I find myself following Houston again because of Yao. I even purchased league pass last year so I can watch rockets games on the east coast... I am not a blind fan and I acknowledge his weaknesses but just him representing asians in a sport I love to play and watch means the most to me. Even though I'm east coast and would love to see the rockets in boston or new york. But being a celtics fan I am big on history and tradition and I am not a big fan of players jumping around so I hope he stays a rocket throughout his career and win a lot of championships with stevie franchise. peace!
This is the dumbest G-damn thread EVER!!! From Yao,..there comes a racial issue? I'm not a Yao-only fan. I happen to be asian, and YES,..it does impress me that an asian guy can play in a league dominated by blacks and caucasians. For all those people bashing those fans who cheer for Yao's stats.. If anyone hasn't noticed.. if Yao play's well,..the Rockets win. That's b/c Yao's a smarter basketball player than Francis. You can tell he makes smarter decisions. Yao is more efficient with the ball, and is either going to the line..or setting up someone with an assist. This isn't to say that Francis doesn't have amazing skills. Yao is definitive with his passes, and confident about his moves towards the basket.
Okay okay.. perhaps that last post was uncalled for. I just decided to read the first page of this thread since I'm a bit slow at work today, and have never bothered to open this one. It just upsets me that such a huge issue was made of a relatively small question; the question is one that is ill-phrased. I'm not even quite sure what the poster was trying to get out of this question. *sigh* my real-life frustrations are exposing themselves online. I. must. stop.
TS78/LMD/Tsujiin/Ex-NBACoach: ClutchCity is a damn good site, w or w/o your back-stabbing remarks about the YM-centric sites.
he/she has an ulterior motive to do so. he/she was banned from the other site---for using a spoofed ID to post 96 obscene / unintelligible msg in one sitting, spamming the site. for that one+ hour, the site was effectively his / her personal site. after being banned, and joining ClutchCity, he / she re-registered w the other site using another spoofed ID, and posted 50+ msg annoying and agitating other posters. It was later disclosed that he/she had previously spoofed 6 or 7 other IDs---using them to bash others poster who holds a different opinion. If it had happened there, it most probably will happen here. FWIW, insofar as the spoofed IDs, some were female and some male. based on this, it can be inferred that he / she has gender identity issues. in one of the non-Yao thread, Tannersearle78 had openly expressed her love for Yao
why do you even care about what people think/say? i love the rockets because they're my home team and because they're awesome. i am not a yao/francis/mobley/jackson/etc fan. who cares?!
