I did, back when the bubble burst and I got laid off.

I had trouble with the concept, at first, but then I got to thinking....

    1) I've been paying for it all my life. Might as well use it.
    2) Hell, the reason we even HAVE unemployment benefits is to help people like me while I try to find another job.

Honestly, a better question is... why wouldn't you file for unemployment?

my mom applied for it every summer when she worked as a pre-school teacher. its something their school told them to do. i had to always do it online for her the past 3 years. she worked for the options/head start government program. it makes sense for a teacher if they arent teaching summer school or anything.

i know my friend went on it for nearly the entire year this year after being let go from circuit city. the sad thing was that he was almost getting just as much from unemployement as he was working from CC. what made me mad was that he wasnt really trying to find another job because of that...he cut out a few luxuries he did have and just chilled and watched movies all the time. He finally got another job maybe 2 weeks ago but he doesnt really like it and is thinking he made a mistake. he never really tried looking for a job or anything i was really mad at him because he wasnt even trying...he is almost 10 years older than me too.

i would go on it if i had to, but dang i'd be making sure i was looking for jobs the very same night i quit/laid off from a job.

They will sned you a packet and in it has a book that you MUST log all of your contacts in your job search. You better keep that thing up to date, because if they choose to audit you and you havent been looking for a job, you must pay back all benefits. And it can happen (the audit).

Its rather easy though. Everywhere you send your resume to, just log it. I think you have to make like 6 contacts/applications per week.

Hope this helps...It may be dated though. I was about 22 when it happened to me. Now I'm....well...NOT 22 ;)

I went on unemployment after I was downsized following a merger. This was a couple years out of college. It certainly wasn't enough money to afford luxuries, but it kept me off the street until I found another job in my field.

It was embarassing to be reduced to cashing unemployment checks, but the fact is, I needed them, I paid for them (and continue to), and I didn't do anything to be fired. Unemployment helped a lot. If you're eligible, sign up. It's easy.

I don't get how this is "embarrasing"...If an employer lays you off, why wouldn't you accept this...It's free money...I've done it before and that the last time I checked, you can still buy stuff with American dollars...

Basically, it's embarassing that you weren't "good enough" to keep a job. That's how I felt, anyway, even though it really wasn't my fault I got let go. I mean, try getting a date if she knows you're on unemployment. There's a stigma there. Just not NEARLY enough of a stigma to prevent me from cashing a check.

Its NOT "Free Money." You as an american taxpayer are paying for it. That is why you need to sign up if the need arises.

I've never done it, but I don't view it as particularly embarrassing. What is embarrassing is not having food to eat.
