Dismayed? Tillman worked for the NFL. He signed an NFL contract. He was part of their family. We lost a national guardsman in our communicty this week. ShallI go out and protest if his place of work or his church want to commemorate him in some way?
Uncle T, I hear you, but I for one don't even believe that someone really wrote those things sincerely (again, please note bama's original "source" was quickly and completely debunked). *If* someone really wrote those things of Tillman, let it go. There will always be a jackass out there spouting off nonsense. There will be someone preaching white-supremacy, eugenics, world domination, conspiracy theories of all stripes -- you name it! But I think you should take heart by reading the Tillman thread that originally appeared in the Hangout forum. Many typically "liberal" posters, including myself, had heartfelt expressions of ultimate respect for the sacrifice of this guy and anyone else who dies under the American flag. If I won't let one nutball bias me against all "conservatives," I beg you not to let one nutball (or bama, actually, in this case) bias you against all "liberals." Some people from both sides of the fence seem so intent on fomenting civil war that what we need is civil discourse and attempts to find ways to respect one another as much as possible.
I respect the leftys that aren't extreme and are willing to have the civil discourse to respect one another with differing views...We all have differing views even on the same side of the fence and I have seen recent posts which distance themselves from the idiocy that was posted by the wild left, and I appreciate that...Heck,... my wife leans to the left, she doesn't like some of my positions, but for some reason she loves me like no other...
Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice -Barry Goldwater. I may be an extremist, but I'm proud of it. I'm proud of the fact that I support the cause of liberty in all its forms. I'm proud to be a supporter of limited govt and holding people responsible for their actions. I'm just calling your flawed ideology out for the actions of folks who are its mainstream. At least some of the more intellectually honest and decent liberals here have had the sense to condemn this awful travesty. Liberalism has made people dependent on govt, pitted groups in society against each other and left us defenseless in the face of our enemies. Carrying the banner of "tolerance," liberals are directly responsible for millions of abortions with their rallying cry "get govt. out of my womb."
ROXRAN, thanks for posting that. Back at you. Down with purple rhetoric! Hey, maybe we could launch a WAR ON HYPERBOLE. That would pretty much put the Republican and Democratic parties collectively in jail though.
Dayum! That was fast. I wasn't expecting one until the Diebold machines kicked in and gave us Bush for another four years.
Okay, I give up! I don't either know what the hell he was talking about a game on Friday. I'm focused on his general disapproval of the NFL honoring Tillman. As a former employee of theirs, the NFL has every right to honor the loss of Tillman. As I said, ask andymoon...
I haven't lost anyone, not yet, but I certainly get your point. A close relative of mine, who I grew up with, recently went to Baghdad to work as a contractor, the pay being so good and the job he had been in being in danger of being "downsized", along with some friends already there telling him about the great paychecks and the danger, "wasn't that bad... ". Wouldn't you know it? Immediately after he left to go there, all hell breaks loose. He's OK, but we are all very worried and you can bet his being there during this makes it all a lot "closer to reality", if that makes any sense. He's there for the money and he would be the last to say he's doing anything heroic. His father was at Chosen during Korea. And so it goes.
Everyone gives up something to become a soldier. It is their new job. Are you saying that just because he left a celebrity-type lifestyle that he is better than every other soldier? How very elitist of you. His life is worth more than a car salesman (or something similar) who volunteered? Does it matter that what you are saying goes against what he believed? Either you are being an elitist by saying he was special, or every soldier (in every army) is a hero, which kind of kills the meaning of "hero." Tillman did something brave and noble, no doubt...it is just a shame that people like you will turn him into a movie of the week.
Maybe you should stop and think what kind of board you're at. He doesn't disapprove of the NFL honoring Tillman, at least he's never said anything of the sort.
What liberty are you defending here ? Looks to me like you decided to take a bunch of random opinions, transpose them on "the left" or "the liberals" and "the mainstream" (presumably that includes myself...I didn't know that I hated Pat Tillman...I don't ever recall expressing anything other than sorrow at his death), and then issue a blanket condemnation filled with your usual overblown insults and hyperbole, oblivious to your own glaring hypocrisy. By the way, should I dredge up Barry Goldwater's thoughts on abortion? I don't think you'd like them too much....
Rimbeaux – First of all, it is the height of hypocrisy for you of all people to call anyone else an elitist. You remind me of the pony-tailed young erudite in Good Will Hunting who got humiliated at the bar by Matt Damon. For you to say that Tillman is the “movie of the week” is DISGUSTING. Pat Tillman gave everything he had for this country, and here you are mocking the way we memorialize him. I can think of nothing worse. It is one thing for you to be against the War on Terror. It is another thing for you to posthumously MOCK a fallen soldier who was in Afghanistan fighting to protect you. For you to show disdain at the way in which Pat Tillman is honored is beyond insulting. It is GROSS. Why are you trying to diminish the honoring of any US veteran? It just makes no sense. NONE. Instead of playing this silly game which you have proposed regarding valuing dead people’s lives, I suggest you take a look at human nature for a moment. People mourn the death of those they are familiar with more so than those who they are unfamiliar with. This seems pretty simple to understand. It does not mean that we don’t mourn the death of the other fallen soldiers, we simply do it in a different fashion – a fashion that commands no less respect to the fallen than the way which we have memorialized Tillman. Tillman’s life was displayed in public before the war, and it should be memorialized in public after the way. Very, very simple and consistent. For you to be playing this “my funeral is better than yours” comparison game is absurd. Pat Tillman was not a part of the US Military when the terrorists killed thousands of people on 9-11. He was a part of the NFL. He gave it all up to serve. He should be honored in grand fashion because he deserves it.
TJ, You are cute. To everyone else, The "movie of the week" comment was literal - I have read that it is already in the works. That is disgusting.
1. Provide a link that describes this movie. 2. Why do you think that honoring a fallen soldier who was protecting America is disgusting?
So you haven't been making sense in a couple of threads, one that you started. EXPOSURE HYPOCRICY BLAH BLAH BLAH
