didn't Les get money back on T-mac with insurance? It's time Les used what we saved. And what about all this China money we get? Dammit, it's time to spend. We're frugal as hell usually, so spend for once and lets build a contender.
Sometimes I wonder if people ever read the OP before they speak. I agree with the OP and I was thinking the same thing myself. Morey paid that much for them because he had to, let's not forget about jersey being interested in Scola and they have plenty of money to spare. It seems to me like Morey is collecting pieces and waiting for the right time to strike.
Lost his mind? that's a very strong statement. If what is lacking for us to be a great team or championsihp contender is Brad, then 2 million or 10 million make no difference. That's the way we should see it. We definitely need a back up center and I think this is a very reasonable price. On Scola and Kyle, it's OK to overpay them now cuz the last years they playeed with us, the way the played and contribute, we were UNDERPAYING them.
I really don't they have been victims any more than everyother team in the NBA has been. Lowry, although has been a bench player, is a starting quality PG. 5-6 mill per is not ridiculous. Scola. 8-9 mill per for a PF guy who puts up 16/8.6 a game is pretty much the going rate. Miller. 5 mill for a 7 footer who is highly skilled is about reasonable. Sure, the signing him for the lle would have been ideal but he wasnt going to take that. End of the day, all of these contracts are pretty reasonable and the most important part is that we know what we are getting for those numbers. All of those players are proven contributors. If they were spending that money on guys who just had one fluke year on some bad team, then I may agree that it could be overpaying. But, as is, these guys are known and proven to be contributors.
Pretty much this. If Morey had been able to get his man in Cousins, maybe he'd have let Scola walk, but we knew we couldn't Landrify everyone
Morey PREDICTED the amount he has to pay to keep the core. He said as much during the T-Mac trade when we had to take Jeffries' contract. So please, don't make it as if Morey panicked. He knew the cost of doing business, asked Les if he'll pay, and paid. Nothing more, nothing less. You may think he overpaid, but that's besides the point. Morey feel they're worth the contract, and Les was willing to pay. That's that.
i really hope he can snag chris paul or danny granger before the trade deadline. paul would put us over the top.
that's a fair feeling. The rockets though, just had to get a legit big man to backup yao, or at least fill in if he isnt healthy.
It really isn't a bad contract. Lets face it, we need it a big man with skills in a bad way. Chuck played his heart out last season, but he can't be given the task of being a back up C for the whole season. Jordan Hill didn't seem impressive in SL so we can't rely on him either. We needed to pay Miller top dollar if we wanted him to come here. I'm sure other teams we offering similar deals and we needed to beat them out. There is no big man out there that we could have signed and said, he is worth it. As good as Morey has been drafting talent throughout the years, the one area that he has failed to get us help is at the center position because the talent there really sucks. IMO, Miller's contract is fair.
At this point we're going to want to use most of our cap space... We're trying to contend, not rebuild.
how much you pay these free agents will depend on how viable your other options are. none of the contracts seem to be out of this world rediculous. morey is getting ready for a big fire sale come the trade deadline. he probably knows alot of teams will be looking to start over under the new CBA...
I think you guys are overreacting to the Miller contract. Les Alexander has shown that going into the luxury tax this season isn't a big deal to him. We didn't have any cap room and there wasn't a better guy out there, so why should it matter to us? At the very least, Miller should be product for one year. If that's all he has in him, next year he essential becomes an expiring contract that is tradeable at the deadline. If he works out for two years, then we can exercise our option on him, and he become an expiring contract once again. That's why 3 year deals with a team option on the 3rd year seem to be Morey's MO (like with Andersen). Lowry's contract might be a little high, but he's still young and will be in his prime when its over so its reasonable to assume he will be productive for the life of the contract. He will be good enough to be tradeable if we go in a different direction, and good enough to start if we decide to trade brooks for something else. I don't have any problems with this contract. Scola contract on the other hand...I guess Morey assumes that with this style and given the lesser demands of euro ball, his body will hold up as well. It better, or else this one could come back to haunt us.
I understand where you are coming from, but I don't think the general sentiment is that he overpaid. I think the VOCAL majority like to complain about every darn thing, but the key is always market price... and unfortunately right now, everyone and their brother have money to spend to the contracts were all slightly inflated. I don't think any of them were worth less than what we paid for them this year. So I agree with you, no Morey has not lost his mind.
