except, they'll now have to start from scratch at QB, pushing other needs to the side. no one that will be available next summer is a viable short- or long-term solution (btw, to whoever asked, schaub is a restricted FA) and my guess is that KC will slap some kind of protection on huard. even if they don't, slow your role - the guy'll be 34 next year and, again, doesn't come in a package deal with larry johnson. believe me, damon huard's not a significant upgrade over david carr. i'd rather let rosenfels babysit the position. so no viable replacement next year, meaning it'll be 2008 before you can find one at the earliest and then you'll need a season to groom him. by the time he's ready (if he's ever ready), johnson, daniels, spencer, winston and the rest of your offensive foundation are all 2-3 years older. and that's assuming you've addressed the OL and running game, both of which probably still rank as more significant problems than QB right now. believe me, the BEST scenario for this franchise is for carr to show up sunday.
The best scenario for the Texans was for Carr to have shown up all season, or at least from game 5 onward. I've been one of his most vocal supporters, and I'm preparing myself to eat crow in a few weeks. Yesterday, Kubiak looked like he was yelling at a teenager on which he's already given up--yelling out of frustration and not with any real hope of getting anywhere.
Why does conference even matter? Ben Roethlisberger played in the Mid-American Conference. Byron Leftwich and Chad Pennington came from Conference USA. Steve McNair played in the SWAC. And so on. Heck, both Terry Bradshaw and Trent Dilfer came from the WAC (Louisiana Tech and Fresno State), and both have won a Super Bowl. If a player has skills, it doesn't matter where they went to school.
But Carr has not ever shown up on Sundays. His whole career he has never stepped up and become a leader. This guy cannot win games, not now, not ever. the Texans are not all of a sudden gonna get better next year or even the year after that. i dont see this team contending for a long time. They might as well draft a QB to continue the rebuilding. Then they could get a solid foundation for the future. A quarterback is a leader if nothing else and that is just something david Carr is not able to do. We know what we have with Carr right now and that is trash. They have a solid core of young player right now but if they dont have a guy to lead them down the field (ala Vince Young vs. Mannings) you wont win many games. When the Texans play on Sunday, you'll be able to see how the Titans will ride to victory on the backs of Vince Young while David Carr will just do enough to "not loose the game." The problem is he, isnt doing anything to win games and that's what it comes down to.
Yeah, Sunday will indeed be Judgement Day for the Texans. In one game, the Texans will either win retribution or face damnation for years to come. I too lived through the dark times of the Oilers and that's why I lay the blame for all of this at the feet of Bob McNair because the first lesson he should have heeded was the one given by the legacy of the Houston Oilers. Instead he put his faith in two bozos: Capers & Casserly and it's almost like the Oilers have returned. Well, maybe not the Oilers themselves but most certainly their legacy of losing and football futility have indeed returned. A bad loss to the Titans on Sunday could very well turn into a historic loss because it be the final disappointment that costs them the interest and allegiance of a generation of Houston football fans. I feel that Houston fans are at a tipping point and, rightly or wrongly, the Texans decision on VY and the result of that decision, could ultimately prove to be a decisive one for many Houston football fans. And that would prove to be a sad epitaph to McNair's dream of bringing pro football back to Houston.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Louisiana Tech was in the Southland when Terry Bradshaw played there.
Good LORD, you make me want to go slit my wrists. There IS a light at the end of the tunnel, no matter what happens on Sunday. Just look at this year's draft picks and how they're playing compared to the first 4 year's draft picks. That should tell you something. The next few years may be ugly, but we aren't going to suck forever unless we rehire Casserly.
You are correct sir which is why I have a sinking feeling that if Kubiak pulls the plug on the David Carr experiment, we'll start the 2007 season with Jake Plummer as our starting QB while Kevin Kolb is on the sidelines charting plays. They have a zero shot at Quinn and none of the free agent QBs are that much better than Carr so I would expect Kubiak to go with what he knows best and that would be Plummer until another young QB is ready. By that time, Plummer's career will be at an end anyway. Just my 2 cents...
I agree, I think this doomsday talk is a little overboard. But this just strengthens the reasons to get replace Carr asap
Meh. You might be right, but it doesn't change the argument, as the Southland isn't a big conference, either.
David Carr showing up this week means absolutely nothing to me, the worst thing he could do in my eyes is "show up" because he is not the answer. No need to drag the failed expirement on any longer. So he decides (bad word, I think he wants to pay better he just can't) to show up then what? We all know that he is not going to sustain it for any length of time, we know he is not an NFL QB, why do we want him to play well in Vince's homecoming. We know we made a mistake there and I hate saying it because I really like Mario but Vince is already better than Carr. Kubiak gambled on him and lost, DC isn't as good as Jake Plummer, sad that he couldn't see that before hand but that's just the way it is. Take the fourth for DC and move whether it's with Sage for a year or not. Sage has proven he is as capable at running the offense or maybe more than DC is. Take AP in the first and Kolb in the second and let Sage give AP the ball next year and Kolb step in the year after. Improve the secondary via free agancy or the third and fourth round and I believe you are on the right track.
you don't draft for need when you have the #1 pick overall. you take best available talent. particulalry when you're the Texans and you needed help EVERYWHERE going in to this draft.
frankly, the texans are probably better off letting rosenfels babysit. why bring in jake plummer? might as well stick with carr.
No need to kill yourself drummer2k because you are one of my favorite posters here. I was just being a bit on the melodramatic side. But in all seriousness, I really do feel that the Texans have come to that perverbial "fork in the road". You must remember that a good number of Texans' fans were actually Oiler fans and what transpired with the Oilers left a sour and bitter taste in their mouths. More than anything, the arrival of the Texans represented a new day and most importantly, renewed hope for Houston pro football fans. Now factor in the intense level of anger at the Texans for all of the losing in the past 4+ years coupled with the initial disappointment of the VY decision. Now add in the surprising positive impact VY has had at Tennessee (which used to be the Houston Oilers) compared to the lack of the same here with DC and you can see where a loss to the Titans on Sunday could very well be the last straw for many folks. As a native Houstonian, I can certainly understand the emotions at play here because I have lived my entire life supporting a football because it carried the name HOUSTON only to be heartbroken in the end from that team's consistent failure. Four years ago, I really thought that a new day had arrived - that things would be different this time only to now be forced to admit that I was mistaken. So I can understand the anger and frustration so many folks are feeling because these are emotions I feel as well. It was torture to watch them (Texans) yesterday. Right now, hope is all I have to go on. I hope that Kubiak is the right guy. I hope that McNair has made the right choices this time. I hope that starting next year, we will soon be able to put these years of losing behind us. Sadly, I can no longer say that I hope that Carr is the right man for the job because that hope is now gone.
What is it with you painty-waist crybabies? Did Bob McNair steal your bottle when you were a toddler? The Texans have won twice as many games as they did last year. The defense, special teams and offense have all improved. McNair made the right choice by picking Kubiak. He is not melded to Carr at all and I am encouraged by that.
