If you can't hassle the shooter you take the charge. That's why the little guys take the charges. Big guys shouldn't really do it since they have better success contesting the looks. Most likely alot of the things Harden does on defense(not fouling hard on a fast break play and not trying to draw charges) are strongly instructed from the front office and coaching staff. IMPORTANT NOTE- This team is not in any way built to win big this year, and this season is about getting better and building something for the future... not about killing your career with injuries to win 46 games instead of 45.
