Which cities are these? The cities I know that punish teams at the turnstile when they are not competitive are perennial doormats on the court anyway. (I will concede that Houston probably gets an above-average buffer from corporate customers who don't care about their record.) And, I don't know if emergency mode is a good place to be anyway. It seems like the Knicks are always in emergency mode and always destroying their future in a vain attempt to rescue the current season. Despite their desperation and despite all the booing, they were over 99% full last season and so far this season. Look at the teams on the bottom of this list for cities that punish their franchises at the turnstile: http://espn.go.com/nba/attendance/_/year/2010/sort/homePct. Which of these made big changes to avoid the wrath of the fan? I don't think teams change their strategic thinking dependent on their perception of the patience of their customer base. As for management, I do think Morey is content with mediocre (if he can get there). He knows his collection of assets is just there to trade for a star player or else complement a star player once he arrives. I don't think he expects to genuinely contend without one. So he's biding his time until the savior comes.
We won a championship 2 years in a row, and because of that our city expected us to stay a winning franchise. It is the sole reason Les Alexander as spent as much money to get the best available. If you take those two years away you've got the Houston Oilers, which were sold .. Once a city becomes complacent with being mediocre - no matter if they are a winning team or not - the team / city stays on that path. We are already becoming a city where other attractive teams lure us in to games. The lakers, Heat, Orlando, etc.. are all teams where no matter who is playing- the stadium is sold out! My whole point is with this thread is that it has been years since anything has been consistent. Defense, Offense, Coaching, Injuries..and on..and on.. .. Have we just plain out accepted being this way? And if not, what you as a fan want to do about it B/C - a team success and it's fan base are ultimately intertwined. Discuss.
Yea and no 'superstar player' is out there so at some point you have to look at blowing it up especially if they keep losing. Set a bomb off, flush the toilet, push the reset button that time will be coming close imo. Morey's collection of assets and his failure to land a 'superstar' is all on him.
In previous years we are mediocre. This year we are TERRIBLE. I would like to see Rockets become mediocre AGAIN.
Mediocrity's the worst place to be in professional sports. At least we're at an extreme rather than being in the middle of that spectrum. So, Barnes, Jones, Irving, or Kanter?
And which do you prefer? Heres mine. 1: Kanter - had a great game against team USA only 19. 2: Irving - reminds me of Chris Paul. 3: Jones - Long and lengthy with a rare skill set Lamar Odom with shot blocking. 4: Barnes - Have not seen enough of him yet to make this decision.
Obviously, we cannot accept mediocrity. What we need to do is will our teams into the path of victory. Our fans will wave our magic "we will accept nothing less than championship" wands and turn Yao into Hakeem and Martin into Jordan. We shall use our combined will and turn the Texans defense into the Steel Curtain. We shall reject the barren Astros farm system, and through sheer willpower make it more talented than anyone else. You're right. By rejecting mediocrity, our fans will change this city into a title-town USA.
If the draft was tomorrow and we had the first pick I'd take either Jones or Barnes based solely off superstar potential. Given time, I'd still most likely take Barnes, but Irving's looked great and from what I've heard(but have yet to see) Kanter's gonna be a beast(barring knee injuries). As much as I hear about how weak this draft is, the top seems relatively stacked with talent to me. Of course there's a significant drop-off after the first half of the lottery, but it's not looking like we're gonna have to worry about it...
i would say"if we are locked for a number on pick",m but i think they are better than number 1 pick status talent wise. (except for courtney lee)

I agree with the fans that say the Rockets are currently looking up at mediocre; at present they are really a "bad" team. The truth of it is they haven't been a really good team for a very long time. Since the championship years, the real Les Alexander era, the team has been largely mediocre. The 2005 team that took the Mavs to seven was a really fun team to watch. Then the 2008 team that took the Lakers to seven, that was a high point. Besides those two teams, the last 15 years have been a portrait of mediocrity. To add insult to injury, some teams have rebuilt several times during this period. The Rockets have thrown away so much time building around the wrong players. Unlike, SA and others they have not established a talented core of really good, durable players.
