i think children are like that b/c parents make such a big deal out the word itself. instead of giving "euphemisms" for sexual body parts, why not just educate the kid with the clinical term itself? what really is the harm in that? call a penis a penis, not a wee-wee.
Most of the people getting offended over the use of Native Americans as team symbols are Native Americans.
That's exactly my point. What "most people" think is irrelevant because they have no say in it. What do the Indians, or Native Americans or First Nation people have to say about it? That's who we should be listening to ...not "most people." Disagree?
I can tell you from first hand experience since there have been protest here in MN when the Cleveland Indians have come to town that most of the people there protesting are Native Americans. I didn't poll the protestors to see if they are Native American lawyers though.
And sometimes that voice is not loud enough to be heard. If you don't speak up for someone, what will happen to you when you're in the same position? And how do you know the NCAA didn't first take action after receiving compalints from Native American groups? This issue has been brought up by them numerous times over the years w/ no results. Great point, I totally agree. This thread has gone off on quite a tangent here BTW.
I'm not addressing whether voices are being heard. I'm addressing that Americans don't bother to try to find out ...whether the information is largely available or not. Most of the time, the info is available if we weren't lazy or isolationists. We spend too much time tiptoing around subjects. If we'd just ask those that are affected and respect their answer, then being "PC" would be easy. At some point, her daughter will learn the word with or without her mother's approval. To tie this back into the thread, complaining about the word Vigina is an example of being an isolationist. She is too concerned about sheltering her daughter than teaching her about how the world works.
