    Very presumptuous of you.

When you start a conversation like this you can expect people to not want to engage in it because it suggests you've already decided the outcome of the conversation in the first place.

I have not been brutalized by cops. Some minor ******* behavior is all. I also don't know anyone brutalized by cops, but then I don't know many poor minorities either. I do have a black relative who was arrested on a BS charge to harass him. It's an abuse of power, but not brutality.

As for the point, it doesn't have to be widespread and it doesn't have to impact friends of relatively affluent bbsers to be institutional or problematic. Many people have had negative interactions with ******* cops. Many people have seen or know about abuse of power episodes by cops. We've seen the extraordinary videos, read the newspapers about when the ******* abuse of power episodes spill over into actual brutality. You can see how the behavior slides over a spectrum. Maybe not every cop is willing to forcibly sodomize a citizen with a broom handle, but they share a station with cops who would arrest a driver for destruction of public property for skidding on ice into a light pole. If the culture turns a blind eye to small everyday abuses of power, should we say it's 'not institutional' when a cop takes that sense of impunity so far that it makes the news? It's the police culture that made him ever think he could possibly get away with it.

What does it matter if I know someone that has been through it personally? I don't see how that validates or invalidates the actual cases of where it happened.

I just don't get the point of it but personally, nope.

I think the problem is that when it happens that people protect the officers that do it, therefore that makes it an institutional issue.

Considering the vast number of law enforcement officers in existence, I don't think it's widespread either. But it's happening with enough frequency that people are catching it on their mobile devices, security cams, and even on LE's body cams. Sometimes, we don't see enough of the video to provide all of the context, but other times, there's pretty cut and dried evidence of brutality. It sucks for the good cops; they're overworked, underpaid, and a good chunk of the populace openly despises and mistrusts them. But if people are being hurt or killed by even a tiny fraction of the people we are supposed to entrust with our safety, then protests are to be expected.

Yes I have seen police brutality against people I grew up around.

When I was a young teenager living in an area that was 80% hispanic and roughly 15% black, the police were called often.

I saw a black policeman kick a 13-14 year old hispanic friend of mine in the face during the summer on the bleachers by the school. He ended up with his jaw wired. He was here illegally and his parents were scared so they didn't report it. Back then a lot of stuff wasn't reported by hispanic immigrants in my experience.

I also was thrown up against the basketball fence for no reason when an officer was looking to arrest someone else. He stopped pushing me up against the fence (I chipped my tooth) after I became completely limp and didn't respond to him screaming at us.

There are others, but I would have to really think about it as that was 25 years ago.

I have never seen an officer shoot someone, and I have seen a lot of questionable actions (where the person isn't complying with the officer but is down) but I am not even including them.

I have seen a lot of good and bad things...... but mostly grey.... but I have seen excessive force thrown around a few times.

On the incidents that have been caught on video i think a lot are questionable.

For instance the guy who everyone thinks was choked to death died from his health. He forced the cops hands by not moving from the spot when repeatedly asked.

That being said for so many things to be on video would suggest a lot more not videoed. Thats a fair point

Not sure but shortly after I graduated I went on a month long train trip with a friend covering the central and western USA. It was awesome, unlimited stops for a month for only $200.

Anyway when we got back we decided to walk over to a neighborhood where most of our friends lived to tell them about it. Half way there we were stopped by 2 constables. They said we looked out of place and wanted to know what we were up to. We told them about the trip and we were heading to a friends. They started questioning us and said so you two are a couple of faggots. Well that was out of nowhere and we were a little confused. They said, y'all went on a trip together for a month....soo... My friend then replied if you go to a ballgame with you're friend does that mean you're gay?

They flipped out saying I go with my wife. They then cuffed us and started talking to each other about taking us to the end of the street and letting their k9 have a go with us.

They eventually let us go. Not really brutality though.

Honestly i have seen a black cop working security at a club grab a friend and force him to the ground only because the friend was being a smart ass about having to wait in line. Thats about the worst i have seen.

Other than that i grew up with kids going to jail very early in life and never heard any of them complain about brutality

Worst thing that ever happened to me was getting a jaywalking ticket on 6th street in Austin from a short cop who was a complete dick. Every other interaction I’ve had with a cop has been relatively good. I’m 38 and white and I’ve always been pretty quiet and respectful when I’ve encountered cops.

I have a black cop friend in HPD and he is certainly not a fan of black men or black culture and he’s pretty up front about it with us. He says he doesn’t feel safe in large groups of black people anymore. He works in murder so he sees a lot of the pretty bad cases obviously. He has mentioned how he has seen some bad beat downs by cops against some suspects and he can’t really report it to anyone. He was never personally involved in them though. If I recall correctly they were from chases or against a suspect involved in violence against a cop. He’s never got into super deep specifics on that though.

Also he is 100% for body cams. He feels they protect the officers far more than they do the suspects. He feels those cases of police brutality that he has seen are very rare and that cops have become more professional over the time he has been in the force.

Rude yes...physical no. Hell, I went to school with a black dude who was smoking weed in his car with 3 other black folks (1 other dude, 2 girls) and was caught by a cop who simply knocked on their window and asked, "where's the weed?". He gave the cop the quarter bag and was told to go on home. He lived in acres homes and wasn't far away from there. He was the type of dude that would come to work in the morning (xray school requires working basically for your education) with blood on his shirt from fighting at the club the night before. But when it came to cops, he was always respectful...always a polite fella regardless of where he was from...he's an MRI tech now making a pretty good living.
Also, I use to hangout with a black family during the Texans playoff games (Matt Schaub days :() ...BBQ's and getting too drunk . They talked about cops one time and had run ins, but never went to jail and certainly not beat up (or of course shot). Also from acres homes...all went to college and have college degrees now and great families...good folks.
