we got to give it up for Calv and Bill, they speak the truth, they want the rocks to win as much as anyone else does. I do miss gene peterson, he's the OG of rocketball announcing, he'll criticize everything and breaks it down play by play. I think calv should coach, be better than sorry ass ewing...

just think Cooper could be stuttering on the play by plays LOL!

i'm just worried that my meet our quote for the year.

the "entire city of philly" thing was a little weird b/c i don't remember that much outright criticism (although with LP i barely got to hear them last year) and bill and calvin have never seemed the type to go that route at one player. they'll call the rockets on playing like crap, but usually not a player. they did do a good job and making it a funny situation so that it wasn't that bad or anything.

maybe they are just frustrated, i don't know, but francis brings enough good to the table that he certainly doesn't need to become their whipping boy or anything (this board takes care of that). i'm not saying he is at this point but it should never get to that. the occasional criticism is fine (as steve does do a lot of dumb things) but for what else he brings he does the rockets more good on the court than bad.

if i ever get to see bill and calvin again i'll see what their tone is on that night.

verse, dont take what you heard for SOP..

Yes, B&C will be the first to point out a problem or suggest a solution for that problem...but they arent in the habit of riding a player timea fter time for no reason..

f they said something sarcastic or made a joke about something a player is doing wrong, it is meant well...they are both to big of Rox homers to make everything seem like it is one players fault.

That is one thing you can say about them, whether you like them or not, or if you think Calvin is too goofy, they both love the team and want them to do well. They tell it like it is, and that s why they are one of the best around

verse, you don't think it's justified?

Bill and Calvin have been around a loooooong time. And they've seen a lot of basketball. I think they know the difference between a smart player not so smart player. That's just the way it is. What? Should they just not say what they feel or know?

JVG has set a higher standard for this year. And I think that mindset has rubbed off on Bill and Calvin. They will not accept sloppy play. Not anymore.

Oh, and why would Francis be "picked" on more than others? Hmmm, now could it be that he's our "best" player? Or should most of the criticism go to Wilks?

    Well, said!

That's what I've accepted. But only because JVG has him playing his game with help from the team/system.

Francis does what he's good at, Mobley does what he's good at, Yao does his thing, and so on and so forth.

But, when player do dumb things, (no matter who they are) they are not off limits. Espeically from vets like Bill and Calvin.

P.S. Anyone notice Boki lately? "Old school, with the finger-rolls!! :D

It's true. Bill & Calvin do post on this BBS. Did you hear that comment in last nights game, it went something like this,

"Steve is at his best when the clock is running down "

"Yeah, because he doesn't have to think too much."

I laughed, but I couldn't believe they're cracking on him so hard being the local commentators.

Calvin likes the sound of his own voice, no doubt. I can see him offering plenty of advice to SF and I can see SF telling CM What to do with it or ignoring him. I do not think that is a wise move considering who has the microphone for two hours every game while SF spends half his time tripping over his D..K.

In case any SF lovers out there still do not get it. No one wants for SF to fail. He is our player and we are Rocket fans. Having said that, FIVE YEARS IS LONG ENOUGH. Show that your game has grown , that you can lead this team, that you are capable of correcting the errors in your game that hurt the team on the floor, THAT YOU CAN PASS THE F*****G BALL. SF has not done that and is now a real life caricature of himself on the court. At least AI, Carter, McGrady and Pierce can occasionally will their temas to victory. SF has not yet accomplished that. Bill and Calvin would have nothing to complain about if it were not so obvious that you make the same mistakes over and over and over and over and over and over .............................................................................................. FOR FIVE YEARS!!!

Steve needs to go to the East which is a guards conference. He'll do well competing against the Pierce's, AI's, Stackhouse's, Carter's, McGrady's and Houston's over there. Of course he'll never get a ring................., it's the teams that play team ball that get to the top. Just ask NJ, Indiana, Detroit and NO.

they weren't as critical, they did talk about the Rockets having to learn how to close out games. Bill was very happy with Francis's pass to Yao on the break, and they both were very happy with Yao's play down the stretch.

They were also pretty peeved about both teams missing free throws down the stretch, saying professionals should hit free throws at the end of games.

After a typical SF foul up in the first half Murphy said "I'm not sayin' nuthin" and "I hate it when I am not allowed to analyze"

Do you think that maybe someone had words with Bill and Calvin about their criticisms?

you know what? i really hope not. i enjoy honest critiquing much more than having fresh roses and potpourri blown up my ass. gimme the truth, please!

    pgab:

thanks. question for you (or whomever):

because i have only had the pleasure of hearing b&c twice this year on LP, i miss a lot of things. one thing i am curious about is whether or not b&c openly talk about who they would like to see take over down the stretch of games. i assume, of course, that they do encourage a hot player, but i wonder if there is a concensus choice (or whether they differ) on who they'd like to see try to take over at the end of games.

Calvin and Bill are right when they criticize steve's decision making. He obviously has problems making easy shots look hard. That is probably because he can do amazing things with a basketball. However, for him to help us win he has to learn when it is ok to make a tough reverse layup and when it would be easier to just stop and pop. No one doubts his shooting ability. He has become a much more unselfish player, but he still tends to miss good assist opportunities. This thread reminds me of a subject that i have been wanting to delve into. CALVIN MURPHY IS A HORRIBLE T.V. ANOUNCER. I know that he has ties to the rockets organization, but they should just let be a team rep or something. He can't talk right. He makes stupid points and he can't even get those out right. Rule number one in sports broadcasting,or any broadcasting for that matter, is pronunciation and validity. He lacks both!

    calvin has street cred! ;)

seriously, calvin has grown on me over the years. he's kind of like the ugly girl that wants to talk to you, and you keep pushing her away. after awhile, though, you realize that she's really a nice person and fun to talk to, so you become friends with her. you'll never "get with her", but she's cool.

calvin's soulful as hell and embarassing at times, but there is no denying that the man knows the game of basketball. i don't see how you, or anyone for that matter, can claim otherwise.

Completely agree. This is why this year Steve is not going to be on my all stars list. Five years already. I'm tired of voting for someone I don't think deserves it in my opinion.

I love Bill and Calvin as Rocket commentators.

Please lets not confuse this to be a one side critique of Francis. They constructively critiqued Yao (be big), Boki (take the open shots), Eddie (go inside - stop settling for 3s), Mobley (move the ball or bad shot selection) and Moochie (what is he doing).

They are fair and balanced IMHO. They call it like they see it. They are have even hinted to Francis that he did be better playing the 2-guard position.

My point here is that they don't hate or dislike Francis or any other Rockets but they hate stupid-ball and soft-ball as much as the next purist.

Are you referring to Francis screwing up? or a foul that was called?
If it about a foul, it is a long-standing inside joke about Calvin's rants about the horrible officiating in the past...I think he was told to tone them down or risk being fined.

If it is about a SF screwup..It is probably something that he has critisized in the past, and was asked not to go on and on about it.

but the last bit is just speculation..

    verse,

Calvin is a big proponent of letting your Big Man work it inside..but he has in the past stated that you should always feed the hot hand. So, if SF,CM, or JJ was the hot hand...rest assured he would want them to take the shots.

Basically, I think his desires change depending on matchups and who has been kicking butt.

I thought it was a great comment. Very funny at the time and very true.

Steve is great but he needs to take some Focus Factor.

Playing bad is one thing but playing stupid is uncalled for and should be pointed out.
