verse you are right, they both help make the other better. I just think Tim has enough skill and tallent to go toe to toe with any big man in the league...regardless of whether its Webber, Garnett or whomever.

Every time I see San Antonio I wish I could have seen Dream and Sampson play in this current era of basketball because I think they were better than Duncan and Robinson. But we will never know.

If D-Rob is such a dominating force, why did the Spurs pull such a tank job to get Tim Duncan. It seems like they would have just ridden the dominating force right to the championship. Duncan can defend, is maybe the best post player in the league, blocks shots, rebounds, has an excellent on and off court demeanor, and a picture perfect bank shot from 15-18 feet. That is why I say that he is the best power forward. Not because of his impressive statistics. It is not just me saying it either, ask Charles Barkley who is the best player in the league, he will tell you it is Tim Duncan. He is like a young McHale and could become the best power forward of all time. If you want to delude yourself int thinking Webber is better that is fine by me, but look at their head to head matchups, Duncan consistantly outplayed him this year, despite the statistical edge in one or two games going to Webber.

Last year with Duncan out of the lineup, the Spurs made a quick exit out of the playoffs. Two years ago, with Duncan, they won the championship. This time around, the Spurs are my pick to win the finals.

Tim Duncan IS that team. He has a decent supporting cast. The Admiral definitely isn't the player he used to be, but having 2 7 footers gives the Spurs the best interior defense in the league. Still, I bet if you replace the Admiral with Cato, they're still the best interior defense in the league. Derek Anderson? C'mon. He was like 3-12 in game 1 of the Minnesota series, and San Anton' still had no problem handling the T'wolves. Duncan had a double double in the first half ... almost in the first PERIOD.

I can go on and on, but I didn't mean to steal the thread. I'd pay Duncan the league maximum in a heartbeat, but I'm a little weary about putting that much faith in Chris Webber.

I hate to interrupt the Tim Duncan lovefest but :

    1) Robinson is a better defender than Duncan.

    2) Charles Barkley said Shaq was the best player in the league, and Duncan was the best player among "those other guys".

    3) Tim Duncan is a center. He is not a power forward. He never has been a power forward and never will be a power forward.

4)The assertion that if you replace Robinson w/Cato, the Spurs would still have the best interior defense is laughable. We've all seen Cato play.

Robinson is a better defender than Duncan? The man that was considered to soft to ever lead his team to a championship? If this is what you beleive then you must think that San Antonio's defense in 95 was supperior to their defense now. There is certainly no question that Rodman is a better defender than the admiral.

Just because Robinson can block shots does not mean that he has suddenly become a defensive stopper. Shawn Bradley can give you 3 blocks a game but I don't think he is going to be in the running for defensive player of the year any time soon. Robinson is soft. He has always been soft and always will be. Duncan has been the leader of that team since the day he was drafted.

    I didn't say Robinson wasn't soft.

I didn't say that Robinson was the leader of the team.

I said that Robinson is the better defender, he has better instincts. You can even ask the Spurs personell, they will tell you the same thing.

"Duncan won every contest against Shaq, C-Webb, Malone, Garnett and Wallace on his way to a championship a couple of years ago now it looks like the spurs will get their second championship in three years...mainly because of Duncan."

Duncan didn't play Malone or Webber that year on his championship run. And he sure didn't win the contest against Shaq, because Robinson was the one taking the abuse by guarding Shaq the whole series. And Shaq didn't guard Duncan the whole series.

"If D-Rob is such a dominating force, why did the Spurs pull such a tank job to get Tim Duncan. It seems like they would have just ridden the dominating force right to the championship. "

They pulled the tank job because Robinson was out for the year with a season ending injury. Actually, they really didn't tank. The Spurs were just that BAD without Robinson in the middle.

And to disregard the fact that Robinson was and still is a pretty damn good defender is a travesty. The guy still averages more blocks than Duncan and plays superior man to man D compared to Dunc.

" If this is what you beleive then you must think that San Antonio's defense in 95 was supperior to their defense now. There is certainly no question that Rodman is a better defender than the admiral."

Hey Rodman was considered a better defender against PF than Robinson against centers. That's true. But there are certain synergies with having two 7 footers with shot blocking abilities playing together and providing support defense. Rodman could lock you down one on one, but he wasn't going to be the support defender that D-Rob and Duncan are.

"Duncan consistantly outplayed him this year, despite the statistical edge in one or two games going to Webber."

They only play each other 4 times a year so if Webber has the statistical edge in 2 contests against Duncan, than shouldn't it be a draw.

Anyways, Duncan is a great player. NO Doubt about it. I've been following his career closely since his sophomore year at Wake. I've been a HUGE fan of his since then. But I would also like to interject the fact that Duncan was earmarked to be a center in this league when he came out, and his damn fortunate to be playing PF along side Robinson. Robinson makes him look like a better player than he is. That's just a fact. Just look at the advantages Duncan gets. He doesn't have to be embarassed playing one on one with Shaq. He gets to be guarded by Larry Johnson during the 1999 NBA Finals. Come on now. JOhnson is standing barely at 6'5", with a bad back and a shell of his former explosiveness. No wonder Duncan had a big series in the spotlight. Can you imagine what Olajuwon would have done in his prime being guarded by Larry Johnson. He would have went off for 60 a game.

And I don't believe Duncan will ever play center full time in the NBA. That was probably the PRIMARY reason he didn't want to play in Orlando. They wanted him to play center, he didn't. He tends to struggle some being guarded by bigger players. It was true back in college, it's true now.

Oh yeah one more thing, Olajuwon and Sampson would have annihilated Robinson and Duncan. No contest. Actually, maybe it wouldn't be so one sided, but the edge would definitely be strongly in favor of the original Twin Towers.

I would take KG over both, and then Duncan because he is a couple years younger than C-Webb.

If they were all the same age, I would still take KG, but Duncan and Webber would be tied.

But hell, I would take any one of them.

The guy that we actually have a good chance at and is pretty good is Davis. And he complements the team very well, and still has a good 4-5 years in him.

I really, realy hate saying anything negative about Duncan. He is outstanding. I don't think anyone is saying he is overrated or anything, just that there are a lot of unanswered questions about him when we call him the best in the league.

    1. He doesn't really have to beat double teams on the level that Shaq, Garnett, Webber and Rasheed do. Duncan as the luxury of passing to Robinson at the top for one of those easy Robinson jumpers.

    2. Duncan is a good defender, but not like Garnett. Garnett is the best defender in the league.

    3. Can Duncan consistantly score against 4th quarter playoff-intensity double teams in the low post like Rasheed can.

Da Man, in fairness to Duncan regarding your statement that he had trouble in college against bigger guys, I do believe he has added around 25 pounds since then.

    2) Garnet
    3) Duncan

an ankle injury is no excuse.

What do you mean an ankle injury isn't an excuse? He can't explode to the basket because of the injury, there's nothing he can do about it. And dieting has nothing to do with an ankle injury? You can't diet in the middle of the season, it would kill your energy level. The only way to lose weight during the season is working out and through activity. That goes back to the ankle injury preventing that. Webber has been a dominant player the last 3 years, but one or 2 bad months with injuries don't change that. I'd sign him in a heart beat. If the rest of the Kings were tough enough mentally they would have made better runs in the playoffs. It may prevent them from doing that now.

i really think that mcdyess is underrated. he always has huge games against us and holds his own against the other top 4's in the leauge. it's just a shame that he doesn't get the pub that the others get because he's on a suck *ss team. how would you feel if we made a trade for him. another factor would be that he resides here in houston along with van exel. i know we had a chance of getting him through free-agency but for some reason, rudy thought quitten was the missing link. how wrong was he? wouldn't we love to have mcdyess now?

Actually we never had a chance to sign McDyess. As I understand it, he didn't want to sign here because of questions regarding our backcourt(Oh, the irony). As we couldn't get McDyess, we went after option No. 2, Quitten.

I dont know about that. As I recall the Rockets decided to go with Quitten. After the decision was made I do remember Mcdyess using that excuse.

Trade bait means someone would actually have to want Cato.

With all the talk of big men. You can't leave out Rasheed. If he could control his temper he would just as good as duncan, garnett or Webber, if not better.

We did not leave him out. He does not belong. Rasheed can't control his temper.
