MM, since you didn't indicate movie or book, I voted movies since you refrenced Star Wars, which is a movie first, then a film adaptation. Movie-wise, it's LOTR hands-down. All three are of such shining quality that I don't know if they will ever be beaten. The Harry Potter movies range from OK to good. None of them so far are 'great' IMO. And there are other series of movies that are better: Star Wars, Pirates and Matrix. Book-wise, I think that Harry Potter is way better than LOTR...but then again, I can name you a few series that are better than Harry Potter in the Fantasy genre. Fun topic.
This is how I thought, until it got to book 4 so I picked up the first one, by the end of the week I had read all 4. DD
Gotta give this to LOTR. Not to take anything away from the HP books/movies. They're fantastic. Classics. But the LOTR books/movies are just the best fantasy stories of all time. Not entirely. I mean, it's fantasy, so just like in LOTR, you have to suspend some disbelief and accept the "magical" element. But there are deeper themes at work. Much like the LOTR books are about Frodo's transition from merely a Hobbit in the Shire to a savior of Middle Earth, the HP story is about the transition from being a juvenile into being an adult. It starts off a kids book, but it's definitely isn't ending like one.
Well I don't think you can compare them and I think it's because HP is not quit finished yet. Once you can look over it's whole body of work, beginning to end, then it might be easier to say which is better. But for me, I can't really compare the two, especially since HP spans 7 books and LOTR 3, so I'll say I enjoy them both equally. I think a better comparison would be Narnia to LOTR...now I haven't read the books, but in terms of the movies, Narnia is absolute s**t compared to LOTR.
50 reasons why Lord of the Rings sucks. http://www.pointlesswasteoftime.com/film/50reasons.html But still LOTR is the best movie ever filmed.
Not quite. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/64qf6cRijYU"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/64qf6cRijYU" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
man, that's awesome!!! i love that movie! i remember being so excited when my parents called me in from playing out front to say, "hey, we're gonna go see the new Star Wars movie tonight." I guess I was about 7 or 8...and I can still remember it.
I stood in line and watched Star Wars the first day it played. This clip, however, is not Star Wars!!!!
yeah, i was about 4 when Star Wars came out. my parents told me they took me to see it...but i don't have much memory of that. i do, however, remember going to see Empire. and of course ROTJ, as well.
Ridley Scott is coming out with the version he was never allowed to show on screen, due to studio interference. Blade Runner, hopefully, will be out in this version this Fall, or next year. Actually, I need to check that out. Needless to say, I can't wait! If you haven't seen it in a long time, just wait for this on the big screen. (I've seen it countless times)
LOTR is way better. Movies and books. I can understand how some people might like the simple, quick read of the HP books over LOTR, but to me, that is part of the downfall. It even kind of gets worse, for me, because Rowling realized she couldn't just write 7 books about a magical boy who goes to magic school every year, so the last few books actually are quite dense in terms of complexity, but I don't think she does nearly as good a job at creating that dense world as Tolkien did. The movies it isn't even an argument. Return of the King won the Oscar for Best Picture, and, it wasn't as good as The Two Towers. The Two Towers, imo, is original Star Wars level good. The Frodo / Samwise portion of it is a little weak, and not as good as their storyline in Return of the King, but the last 30-45 minutes of The Two Towers is just awesome. When Gandalf appears on the mountain top with the Riders of Rohan...fantastic. Return of the King is great as well, but just doesn't hit you quite as hard...by the final battle outside of Mordor, you're kind of thinking, okay, another battle scene that they surely can't win but will somehow pull it out. But Return of the King is still better than any of the HP movies. I might be inclined to agree that Harry Potter 3 & 4 movies were better than Fellowship of the Ring....maybe. On a purely movie basis, I'd rank them as follows: 1. LOTR: The Two Towers 2. LOTR: Return of the King 3. HP: Pirsoner of Azkaban 4. HP: Goblet of Fire 5. LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring 6. HP: Order of the Phoenix 7. HP: Sorcerer's Stone 8. HP: Chamber of Secrets Chamber of Secrets really wasn't very good...though Gilderoy Lockhart was well acted. I guess I'm definitely a nerd.
Well, I voted for LOR as I've never read the book or seen the movie...I bought them for my kids, but they haven't touched them...Maybe I'll try one...
Why are so many people so down on the FOTR? I Like the TT the best but the FOTR was also amazing. It was pretty close to the TT And to me ROTK was less good than the other two. so for me TT FOTR ROTK Sure FOTR didn't have the big fighting scenes, and maybe it starts a bit slow(logical since everybody needs to be introduced). But it is a great story. And to me the scenery is amazing.
Haha, thanks for the advice. Guess I should pay some attentions to HBO's replay of this series from now on. Yeah I believe it would be so much fun to hang out with you and other Clutchfans but sadly I live a Pacific Ocean far away from Houston. I can never make up a trip to States but I still believe one day I will watch Rockets game live at Toyota Center (hopefully before Yao retires or being traded ). And DD if you have any plan to visit Hong Kong, do drop me an email and beers are on my treat.
i love fellowship of the ring. it's ALMOST at two towers level but i agree both are better than the last one, which was still excellent. i haven't seen these movies in a long time, might have to pop them in.
