The myth that there aren't many great shooting guards in today's game is an incorrect statement, in my opinion. I mean, sure if you look at the player who identify themselves as shooting guards by position then the list of good shooting guards is pretty slim. But if you look at player's mentality and tendencies, then you have a solid amount of great shooting guards into day's game. Westbrook and Rose, even Lin are names that I immediately think are more shooting guard than a point guard. I have even heard many say that Durant is a 7 foot shooting guard, which I cannot disagree. And that's not even counting swingman players like Paul George. If you add those player to the shooting guard list, it's pretty impressive. In today's NBA, if you're under 6'5" you will have to play point guard and if you're above 6'7" you are now at least a small forward. Only the players in between those highs can call themselves shooting guards today. The standards for guard positions today is really more based on size than on actually tendencies of the players. And because of that, it looks like the shooting guard is dying out when it's really still alive and well.
off topic, but here's a fun article asking OKC players how tall Durant is after an interview when Durant says he's 6'9 http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2013/01/31/wait-kevin-durant-is-how-tall/
