Yes he does have the tools, and it isn't the first time he has done it. He did it against Kobe, James and Wade at key points this season. He has the physical and mental ability to be a very good defender. Right now he is carrying an enormous load, and it is his first season doing so. Jordan, Bryant, Wade and James all developed their offensive games without defense and then adjusted. As to the point that James is a professional and his minutes and offensive role should have no impact on his defense... Just not true. Look no further than Chandler Parsons.
unless you're miami, or whoever dwight is playing for, there's a pretty good chance your max contract is a slacker on defense a lot.
