The truth is, there are many competing motivations for each individual player. Players generally value winning to a certain degree, because it sucks to lose, but extenuating factors may result in motivations that overshadow the desire to win.

Every player on the rockets has motivations beyond winning. Below are some of the external motivations I imagine our players having:

    1. Dwight Howard: To prove that he is a legitimate post-up center in the vein of Hakeem, Ewing, etc.
    2. James Harden: To be the man, be a legit MVP candidate.
    3. Chandler Parsons: Prove he can be the third star. The need for the big contract.
    4. Patrick Beverley: Prove he's a starting point guard in the league. Also needs a big payday.
    5. Jeremy Lin: Shut up haters. Prove that McHales making a mistake not starting him.
    6. Omer Asik: Get minutes anyway I can and hope I get traded soon.
    7. DMO/TJONEs: Get into the rotation anyway possible.

    etc...

It's just question of how much these motivations override the common goal of winning a basketball game, and whether some of these motivations can be put aside, at least temporarily, for the common good.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Harden or Howard. And I like McHale as a coach too. But right now, McHale seems to be giving them a little too much freedom to do whatever they want.

heh? he's smiling and laughing after getting intentionally fouled.

There's no question dwight and harden have alpha male talent...but they dont have the alpha man fortitude or will to win.

You think Dwight Howard's competitiveness and intensity is comparable to a cp3? kobe? You're crazy if you do.

Howard just might be a bit of a head case. Still sure he wants to win.

Harden (and a lot of other young players on our roster like Lin for that matter) might still be more concerned with carving a niche as a star player. That is understandable and quite common actually. For example, Asik would probably leave the contending Rockets for a non-contender just for a chance to play more. Same goes for Lin. He could understandably leave a contending team for a chance to start on a lesser team.

So I wouldn't pin this on Harden at all. He's just extremely confident in his scoring abilities (as he should be!) - but needs to trust his teammates a little more. Yesterday could be the turning point.

NO MATTER WHAT - I could care less about who high-fived who and who looked happier when so-and-so made a big shot. That's just gossipy old hen talk.

Wow, a robotlike high five. I guess you guys never watched any games from last season, when guys were celebrating like crazy when any of the players (Harden, CP25) did well. If you don't see the difference in the culture from last year to this year, I dunno what to tell you.

That's because the goal this year is to not just make the playoffs...

Wish there is a filter function where I can eliminate all 13ers. This is so wrong in so many ways..........

i think harden needs more time to develop himself to be a leader. Now he still seem to have the mindset of a 6th man: In order to help the team win i have to score. There are a lot more then scoring for a leader.

I wouldn't say he's just playing for stats. But like I said before in another thread, I hope to see the fire from Harden, that the kind of "I'm going to carry this team to win no matter what" fire from team alpha player.

Other good players that I do not see the fire (or didn't when they were alpha players): Bosh, Pau Gasol

He's injured and he needs to recuperate properly. I just hope Rockets' coaches will fully understand this and limit his minutes or shut him down for the meantime. I want a full-powered Rockets come playoffs time (and during regular season when face those greater teams).
