Just an interesting fact I stumbled over ...
You were a day late in wishing Happy New Year in China (Feb 18) but two days late in Viet Nam (Feb 17).

    Happy New Year!

Well, I think most of our Chinese posters have been too busy with the festivities to reply to this thread.. me included. Or maybe they don't venture into Hangout at all, hmm

Anyway, I'm wondering why you guys are all saying Gong Hei Fat Choi, which is Cantonese.. the greeting in standard Mandarin is Gong Xi Fa Cai :)

Yeah, red packets rock. I rake in a few hundred bucks every year.. it's a good reason to remain single!

I would agree with you, but I really like red packets and Chinese New Year snacks

Unfortunately in the US we don't even get a holiday. :(
Good thing it fell on a Saturday. I hate celebrating Chinese New Year either a few days before or ahead when its not on a weekend.

For most of US History Chinese immigrants were from Guangdong so many Chinese traditions celebrated in the US are Cantonese.

I think once you get in your 30's though they stop coming and then you just get grief from relatives about why you haven't married yet.

Those snacks are pretty good. I brought back some of those little eggrolls with shrimp in them from Bengawan Solo along with some almond cookies from Macau.

I thought it might be something along those lines.. cool

That's true. But I don't have to worry about it for half a decade or so :D

Well alot of Chinese people are having sex to celebrate it since having a child in this year (golden pig, not just regular pig) is suposed to be very very lucky.

BTW, just gave out my first lucky money this year. felt like I was giving up my firstborn. I'm sure this gets easier next year...

There's some debate whether this is really the year of the Golden Pig. I heard from someone else its the Fire Pig.

I hear many people got married last year in order to have a child this year... all of us Mexicans know that this is NOT necessary... we have kids WITHOUT marrying... ;)

So... nobody could tell me what the songs the MARIACHI at the Chinese Community Center was singing... :(

    I get it for you:

    1. 阿里山的姑娘 "Girl from Mountain Ali"
A popular folk song from Mainland China but it's singing about a "famous" mountain in Taiwan. I say "famous" because its so well known in mainland China but not so much for Taiwan people

    2. 其实你不懂我的心 "Actually You Didn‘t Know My Heart"
A pop song in early 90s (?), by a Singer from Taiwan: Angus Tung
