One thing this episode should have taught everyone is to have a legal document drawn up to make your desires known. If you are married, you should also actually discuss your decisions with your parents and family so they understand what YOU want and not what they think you want. Even if you can't afford legal representation, simply write up what you want to do and have your parents, husband and kids read it and acknowledge that they understand it. This whole ordeal could have been avoided with written verification of what Terry Schiavo desired and open communication with her entire family.
I'm with bobrek. The only thing the whole Schiavo fiasco should have taught everyone is to have a living will as part of your estate plan. Anyone who does not after the Schiavo mess is an idiot.
