Its not administering a punishment. Isreal is removing a threat (hamas and its infastructure). Unfortunatly, Hamas's defense system is to hide behind civilians and children. No culture has ever implemented this strategy of hiding behind your kids as far as i know. Hopefully, to hide behind your kids becomes forever known as 'the Palestinian Stategy'. Palestinians overwhelming support Hamas and this defensive strategy.

I find the 'palestinians really hate hamas; polls are wrong' view incongruent with the videos i saw during the oct 7th attack and the actions i see by palestinians outside of gaza. The videos showed corpses of young girls being driven through gaza and palestinians all coming out to cheer and molest the body. Here in the US i see no palestinians protesting Hamas. Seems like wishful thinking

 

Sadly, I fear that you are right, and it is a direct result of the indoctrination from early childhood, and the link to the religious ideology makes it even harder for people to dissociate from the Jihadists. Even many of those who think the Jihadists go too far will still choose them over "the enemy" from the Quran - the Jews and "infidels".

 

Actually early Zionist would blend in with civilian populations when they carried out attacks against the British. So did Jewish resistance in the Warsaw ghetto.

Standard insurgent warfare is for fighters to blend in and hide among the civilian population.

 

This is not equivalent of hiding behind your kids. it is not 'Standard Insurgent Warfare' to shoot rockets at another country's civilians from schools and hospitals. Palestinians are uniquely horrible in history.
