Manny, how about just plain insluting?: Your use of alliteration leaves much to be desired and your signature's horridness can only be described by vocalizing bestial grunts and howls accompanied by random banging on aluminum garbage cans until they retreat into sad irregular clumps of defeat.
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I was never a grammar whiz to begin with, but by the time I got my Journalism degree I was completely screwed up. To this day I have absolutely no idea where to put commas, so I just toss them in whenever I get the urge. And I spent several years as a newspaper editor. Go figure.
I wish that I could explain the sig, but then I would get killed. Now, that is the rimmy I know! It has been an honor to be peppered and pickled by the professional poet (that is why you did choose the moniker, rimbaud, right?).
That is a long story. I explained it in a nick thread that I started a while back. Find it if you really want to know. Don't limit the search to the hangout forum either, lol.
yeah, commas are the worst. in Journalism, you're supposed to go to the grocery store for an apple, some tampons and milk. but in English, you're supposed to go to the grocery store for an apple, some tampons, and milk. then, once you've mixed in your appositives and your independent and dependent clauses, plus your adjectival lists, you're looking at one, big, commatic, mess, stack on top of that the fact that one very widely used English grammar textbook was used by public schools for almost 50 years with a typo that was being taught as gospel truth, and it's almost too much for anyone to care about anymore. anyway, halle berry is really attractive, and damn the man!
Okay, I just wanted to go back to what DaDa and Princess were saying about how we shouldn't discuss race anymore as an issue--how we should just let it go and move on as a unified people. Why? So things stay the same? Like someone mentioned earlier, and I thought this was a good example in case any of you missed it, but should we expect child abuse to just go away if we stop bringing it up? Jeff brought up the exact same thing I was thinking when reading your posts, DaDa. You certainly have an idealist perspective about race in this country, and I think the majority of Americans do as well. It is not anyone's fault--I think it's just the way we perceive things through TV and other sources. I'm guessing most people actually don't think that race is a problem anymore, or at least not a big one, but we're only talking 40 years here in which blacks could not use the same restroom as white folks. That's not a long time. I'm 22 and I really haven't felt any impactful social change throughout my entire short life. Bottom line: most black people still lead lives that, in terms of material wealth, are worse off than white people. That's not a coincidence, and it very rarely has anything to do with how hard they as a people work, their attitude, or anything they themselves can control. That is not right. So, when Halle Berry wins this award, it should be mentioned that she is the first AA to win it. That is called progress. And if at anytime in the future we are still talking about black people making progress, then that shows that it is not yet time to just ignore the past and wipe the slate clean. I don't think we're even close to that point. I think it is impossible to overestimate the impact slavery has had on AAs. And while DaDa or Princess may not feel personally responsible for what their ancestors did (they shouldn't), I think America as a whole should accept social responsibility for it. Just because something is not your fault doesn't mean you should just ignore it.
What is an african american? I mean does that person have one foot over the ocean? Now I know that is a ridiculous statement, but it is exactly what we should be getting too. Everyone should be AMERICANS ...race...religion...sexual preference should have nothing to do with anything. DaDakota
I agree 100%. No one here is pretending that racism is no longer a problem and no one here is saying "if we ignore it, it will go away." What people like myself and Dada are saying is that the more is gets talked about and the more it gets harped on, the longer it will take for the racial rift to heal. The longer we keep insisting that we define ourselves as different through the use of labels, the longer it will take for it to heal. The absolute easiest thing we as Americans can do is to just say "I'm an American." That should be the first thing people do to let the healing process continue.
Yea, Reese is a hottie. I should have put her in the "Hot Chicks" tournament. That reminds me - mo - you need to vote in the Elite Eight thread.
Yeah. Jennifer Love Hewitt's out so that ruins the whole thing and Reese isn't in it, so it's messed up. I'm going to vote soon.
Hollywood as a whole may on the liberal side of the American political spectrum. It is certainly not "liberal" in the spectrum of 1st world democracies. Further, what is wrong if Hollywood is left of center in the American political spectrum? The Fortune 500--which have a far more dominant role and pervasive influence in our society--is certainly right leaning on average. Do conservatives fret about more balance in the politics, lobbing and spin activities of the Fortune 500? I also reinterate Prempeh. Talking about problems don't cause them to exist, and deciding not to talk about problems rarely helps them. Just ask many of the bishops directly or indirectly (those who tried to hide things) in the scandals across the world. (Note: This is not a shot to Catholics, I was in a Catholic church this sunday. But there was some seriously, and it appears widespread, misguided thinking that sweeping the problem under the rug was the best way to minimize the problem. I just don't get some reactionary comments to anything having to do with race, ethnicity, culture or cultural diveristy. It is a part our national landscape like any other differences are that make our nation great--be it diversity in terms individual differences or differences do to religion, sex, sexuality, politics, etc. Why do some get "tired" of hearing about race or ethnicty but little else (well, I guess many get just as tired about hearing about sexuality-but that is another topic). Makes me think maybe it is because it makes some (particularly in the dominant group of which I am one) being uncomfortable, but that isn't a good reason to not talk about it to me.
