In his early days, Hakeem could get the ball down low in a double or triple team situation, go up with the 2 or 3 guys hanging on him and make the shot 50% of the time. His philosophy was "why should a guy shooting 50% pass off to a guy hitting 40%?" I think Rudy's greatest accomplishment was convincing Hakeem to make that pass out of double & triple team coverage.
What about Kareem? Woudl it make sense to bring in KAreem Abdul Jabbbar as an assistant coach to help with Yao's development? http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/bk/bkn/1480760
I think Kareem would be a great teacher for Yao. Bring him in if he is interested. Also, Kareem is a black belt and I remember someone saying that Yao was verse in martial arts as well...they could get together and teach Mo and Cato some toughness after practice.
I believe Bruce Lee ussed to be his teacher for a while ( apparently Bruce made alot of money training hollywood movie stars, american athletes, etc). I am all for Kareem coming here and helping Ming. Kareem could not get a sniff when he wanted a coaching job in the NBA. Now that Kareem has led his minor league team to the championship, it may be time to move up to the NBA. This would also be an opportunity for Kareem to get his foot in the door of NBA coaching.
I believe it was only for a half a season. After that he not retained. I think he can be a good coach in this league.
That sums it up nicely. Hakeem learned from a combination of three people: 1. Guy V. Lewis - he really helped Hakeem to learn the basics of the game 2. Moses Malone - this wasn't really teaching so much as schooling - as in Malone regularly schooled Hakeem at Fonde Rec Center helping Olajuwon to adapt 3. Carroll Dawson - Dawson taught Hakeem his jump hook and helped to refine the drop step move Most of the rest was developed just in his offseason time on his own. He was a private guy - still is. As for Kareem, he could probably add his skills to the team, but a lot will depend on how much of a backseat Kareem is willing to take as an assistant. No one is going to hand him a job and say, "Ok, you're second in command." Kareem has a huge ego. His battles over seats on airplanes, plays in the huddle, etc are legendary. If he becomes an NBA assistant, I can't imagine he'd do it on a club with an established coaching heirarchy like the Rockets. I'd expect to see him on a staff more like the one that would exists if Drexler gets the job in Denver. With Drexler as coach and Kiki as GM, that would seem like a pretty ideal incubator for Kareem.
U know . ..that would be an absolutely AWESOME Sparring match Kareem Vs Ming. Rocket River I love the Karate Flix
Didn't Kareem as a Clip assistant help Kandi develop his low post game? I vaguely remembering hearing Kandi crediting Kareem with helping him to become a better NBA center. Bringing Kareem next offseason (if Yoa is around then) seems like a better idea than making him a permanent assistant.
Yes, that poor EG. He's really suffered under Rudy T's coaching. I think one of his other players won some trivial little award... oh yeah Francis was Rookie of the Year. That Rudy T... He sure hasn't done anything to help any young talent.
