Hey, you're Muslim also mash'Allah, I didn't know that. I've seen him at 3 different ones in the past week and a half, Synott, Mission Bend, and Dulles. He's usually at Synott for Maghrib. I'm not sure where he goes for Jummah (Friday prayer). He probably goes to the Dawah Center downtown.
Yeah, we have 1 and most of the time 2 per month. If you don't mind my asking, what other sorts of church-related activities do you guys have? You can e-mail me at thatboyz@aol.com or IM me on AIM, my sn is also thatboyz.
I really doubt that was his, he's been driving his white Mercedes Benz G-Wagon for a couple of years now. Actually, I've never seen him in anything but a white Mercedes. He doesn't put rims or anything like that, he keeps it the way he bought it, fairly simple...well as simple as a Mercedes Benz can get :-D
No offense, you guys are treating him like some kind of saint. He's human. What if he is truly into cars and knows car specs from bumper to bumper (kind of like a hobby). That could mean he takes an interest in the cars he has (maybe not to show off, but for personal pleasure). The cars I see him driving at the masjid and other parts of town shows that he is not an idiot when it comes to what car he drives. He or someone else is doin their research before getting those cars. Yes he does not go as far as picking up Ferraris or Mclarens but I am sure that none of you know him well enough to say that he would never put rims on his car.
Back when I lived in Houston, the Dream would frequently visit the Synott Masjid. On the annual fundraising night, he always matched whatever net contributions were made. He used to come every Sunday morning for Arabic class at Fajr (dawn) as well. Good to hear that he's back in town and doing well.
You should have asked him what he thought of Juwan Howard's game. You should have asked him to pray that the Rockets get a decent PF for Allah's sake next year! You should have asked him about throwing at punch at Mitch Kupchak in Game 6 vs the Lakers.
The place I work at are full of Muslims and they are like that too. They're all very religious, humble, nice, helpful ... etc ... just like Hakeem. And yea those daily prayers really require some effort, at least seemingly.
Damn I didnt realize how many of these guys are muslim on this board. I've seen Hakeem for years starting from Synott Masjid, when we would all read qu'ran together nightly, and then regularly at Dulles Masjid. I dont see him as often though...
Are you kidding? It is common knowledge that all Muslims around the world are Rockets fans, that's 1.3 billion strong (some of them just don't know it yet ). Add to that all of China (another 1.2+ billion people), and that means about half of the world's population are Rockets fans. In fact, it is purely un-Islamic to cheer for any other team.
Wow! Small world, eh? What was he doing back there? Setting up a basketball clinic? The Saudis stink in basketball, they need all the help they can get. I was living in Jubail for a few years in Saudi, and when I and my friends went over to the neighborhood sports club to play indoor b-ball, it was commonly accepted that you didn't choose Saudis to be on your team, or you were assured a loss. So instead, we picked up the Somalians and the Sudanese guys make up a team so we can have a chance in hell (we played against an all-Aussie/British team that was quiet good, they had a guy that was 6'7" ). Now soccer, that's a different story, my team was usually all Saudis
Yah, I know he goes to Synott a lot back in the day, as it happens, that's the closest mosque to my house anyways (I live near the Stafford area)
It has nothing to do with him being a "saint" or not, it just has to do with his taste. I just have never seen him drive around in anything but that big Benz (the S500 I believe). I don't even think he has tons of cars laying around like Shaq and other NBA superstars have. Hakeem strikes me as a practical guy, he doesn't spend just for the sake of spending money. But I could be wrong of course. I am just telling you my impression of him after meeting him a few times. He has a lot of business back here in Houston, so he is probably back here to check on his businesses and spend some time back home.
I didnt know you, especially, were muslim. I thought you were simply a generic white guy. hehe.. nothing against white people, so dont get all bent outta shape.
I am a muslim man as well and when i used to see him and be seated next to him he was the absolute most humble man i have ever met. i remember this young kid came up to him and asked for a autograph while hakeem was reading the quran and instead of being mean and arrogant he actually smiled at the request, put his arm around the boy and asked him to sit down next to him...he then proceeded to teach him that its not good to ask for a autograph in a time of prayer and that he can come to him as soon as prayer was over to recieve a autograph...just a small example of how a celebrity can make a difference in the community besides everything he did for the city.
I met him many times. He comes to the mosque on synott alot. Really, only good words can describe this man. Hey what mosque did you see him at?
