I can think of a lot of sports that most guys don't keep up with very well. Figure skating... gymnastics... :)

I think age also factors in at times.Look,I'll always be a sports fanatic, but there are other priorities and interests that pop up as you get older.

Actually, I know quite a few guys who don't follow sports, hunt or fish or anything like that. Mostly, they are musicians who are just more into that.

As for gay men, some of the craziest sports nuts I've known are gay.

A friend of mine can fall asleep like clockwork during the Super Bowl....has no idea what teams are what....just not a clue.

As for gay guys....I have a gay guy in my fantasy baseball league and he is actually one of the more knowledgable owners.

What is it that drives us - men, especially, to like sport? Competition, dominance, aggression - these are the sort of thing that we get to experience viscerally and as a sort of tribe, so there's the individual response and the group response, which is a sort of innate thing we can plug into, without really killing anyone, without other non-socialized, anti-evolutionary regression - like say, with bikers.
Sport plays a good role in keeping us men - the correlation of native masculine traits is real - it's not a nuturing, planting, feeding breeding
arena - it's a world of hunting and killing, status hierarchy and dominance, intimidation and aggression, and pack behavior.

So - to reject that, is to reject that part of ourselves and our culture.
I suppose there are other ways to experience that same thing, in yourself and in the "tribe" of our shared community, but this is our inherited social response, and we can connect together, readily.

Now, that said, I think baseball is so f-ing boring I can't stand it. What up, gramps? How was that your gen's shared culture? Dude, I can't plug in. And football seems like such a time suck. Big guys push each other. Big f..ing deal. Woo hoo.

Basketball, on the other hand, it's God's gift to man- a divine clockwork that we glimpse briefly when men's mind's converge and we approach the sacred and primal goal - put it in the hole :). That or a bunch of tall goofs grabbing their crotch after tossing a ball around. I forget.

If those were sports, you'd be right.

I get pissed when I'm watching a game or the Rockets come up in conversation and someone starts dogging them when they only know 2 players on the team, and haven't seen a game all year.

For example, saying "Yao Ming sucks" because he's 7'5" and doesn't score every possession or something ridiculous like that. I can't think of any more specific examples, I just hate it when guys act like they know all about the team when they don't even watch the games.

The worst type of guy is the poser. The kind of guy that pretends to be a sports fan but definitely isn't. The fan who is in the sports bar cheering and booing louder than anyone in the building, but then asks, "So why isn't Mobley playing?" Or they have no clue what an illegal defense is or a charge or anything. That crap pisses me off. Frigging Posers.

Those posers seem to be 75% of the people who call sports radio in Houston as well.

It's not gay guys who don't like sports, it's male models. And Metrosexuals.

I don't know about that. It seems that if someone is listening to sports talk radio and/ or actually takes the time to call in they are a pretty hard-core fan.

I know a lot of band nerds/ "geek" types (and I mean that only in the sense that they would call themselves that) who don't follow sports or follow it casually. This includes guys. They usually have something else that they follow instead... fantasy, science fiction, etc.

That's the part that really bugs me. I don't care if you don't follow sports, to each his own. Just don't pretend like you do if you don't.

One of the guys asked what happened at one point late in the game. I told him TMac got the rebound but fumbled it out of bounds. He started going into this (fake) tirade about how T-Mac makes all this money and he can't even hold onto the ball. I was like....dude, did you happen to watch either of the first 2 games? Or any game this year for that matter?
