All you have to do to keep him is say your matching any offer (bluff), thats how you outsmart everybody.
A lot of it depends on Morey's plan, I think if he's serious about blowing everything up, he lets Chuck leave. If he tries to get Howard, I think he signs Chuck for a low offer for a year, and sees how the season goes (I'd prefer this, unless we're going all in and trading all of our veterans) It's going to come down to money, I just wonder who's going to sign him if not us? He's a good post defender but he certainly doesn't bring the skillset most teams have in mind when they try to bring in a big man.
He's been the leader for a long time. If he leaves, we lose some of our identity scrappy, hustle and heart.
I like Chuck but keeping him just makes us a 9th seeded team again. I'd rather see him go to a contending team, and "develop" our young players.
Weren't the rockets the only team that gave him a chance? It's gonna be hard for him to leave this team.
Feigan wrote on his blog recently that the Rockets want to keep him, but look to move him in a backup role( I assume, that means they dont want to break the bank to resign him as well). If another team offers him a significant contract, and primary position in the rotation, its very likely the Rockets and Chuck will part in an amicable departure. The ball is in the court of Chuck, his agent, and a contending team that needs him in a primary post role with money to spend. Id say there is a 40% chance of him signing elsewhere and 60% chance of staying here in Houston where he knows what he will get financially and playing time. The Rockets will make him an offer, but its up to him whether or not he will stay under the conditions the Rockets have set.
I think the Rockets keep him at an affordable price. I don't see another team offering him a big contract. Too many star free agents this summer.
I wouldnt be so sure about that. teams like the Knicks, Celtics, Thunder, and Heat could offer him virtually the same low mid level contract and ensure alot of playing time on a contending team. Chuck is not as far below the radar as he once was.
Hayes on the Heat would be totally unfair. I don't think the Thunder would need him. Knicks would love to have him just for the simple fact that he won't abuse Amare anymore. Celtics would make sense, but they would have to part with Baby Davis.
Most of the teams you mentioned likely will have access to a lower mid level contract under the new CBA to offer to a player like Chuck. All of those teams would love to have a big like Chuck to fill in holes in their post.
