I own several guns, and I'm a proponent of owners rights and most laws that try to inhibit gun ownership are junk. That said... this might be the dumbest idea I've ever heard. If you want someone with a gun inside schools to have a gun in case of a VT or Columbine type scenario... fine. Hire an off duty cop. Way too many fights between teachers and students and other assorted conflicts that don't need to have a gun in the room while they are resolved. Does a teacher pull the gun if some kid is getting the crap kicked out of him in a hallway? 99.9999% of the time the answer is no, but when walking around with a hammer some people see nails everywhere.
I'm sure most teachers will be thrilled to be asked to, amidst their other tasks, now defend the student body with district-issued handguns. I think that's a fabulous idea.
1. This is such a small school district, I imagine the chance anyone needs a gun there is very small. I don't expect to read any stories from this district's gun rules either way. (Of course, that itself doesn't make it a good or bad idea.) 2. Also because it is small, I'm sure it is cost prohibitive for them to hire police or other security to do the gun-toting for them. Besides that, having a cop or two on campus doesn't fill the philosophical mandate of arming the people. For this theory that concealed carry will make people safer, you need a situation in which every adult might be packing heat. 3. I don't think I'd want to see this in HISD. It's too big and administration can't have sufficient control. But, I could see it working in a small school like this one. Except that it probably isn't needed there either. 4. Why can't people accept that there is a very small chance that you or your children might be suddenly murdered by some crazy wackjob? You don't need to plan an airtight defense against every potential danger. Something will get you in the end anyway. Think about how many people die in a school shooting vs. auto accidents or cancer or other common killers. More kids probably die falling off bicycles than in school shootings; but they still ride bikes.
