I personally don't see what the big deal is. I would LOVE to have Patrick Ewing come in as an assistant coach to help teach Yao and Griffin! That is exactly the type of person we need in there to teach these young bigs the basics of post play offensively and defensively. Plus Ewing could be "hands on" in practice. I think that would be great. I would rather have Ewing than Larry Smith despite the fact Larry was a Rocket. Wouldn't everyone agree?

As for Olajuwon and Mo Malone. They would obviously be great too! No quesiton about it! However, Olajuwon from everything I have heard does NOT have any interest in coaching. So just because he is a Houston legend let's not just keep pining for him to be an assistant coach. If he doesn't want to do it, then he doesn't want to do it. End of story. Mo Malone on the other hand has said publicly that he would love to coach Yao. I really don't know what kind of "teachers" Ewing and Malone are but as players they were great. And with either one Yao could learn alot. Probably a lot more than Larry Smith is teaching them.

If JVG is hired he obviously has a connection to Ewing so that is a natural fit. Let's not get all BLINDED about former Knicks of JVG and Ewing who might be here to HELP the team and REJECT their efforts just because they were former enemies. Personally I think that is stupid.

Hmmm...I'd actually not object at all. I think that you can easily argue that Dream beat Ewing because he was far, far more gifted and athletic, and it was only Ewing's learned skills that ever kept it remotely close. Remember Ewing was originally coached by one of the best big men coaches ever, in Thompson, and was also guided by Riley, who knows a thing or two about teaching big men.

Ewing was a very solid fundamental big man who went about the game with dignity on the court, and was often disadvantaged by being outclassed in terms of natural ability. Not a bad resume for a big man coach.

Additionally, like Dream, Ewing is a firm proponant of the inside out game, and his hiring as our big man coach would help in that regard. Really not a bad idea at all, assuming he has any communication skills.

I will accept Ewing if Hakeem and Malone continue NOT to step up to the plate.

Yao deserves this big brother figure, if its got to be Ewing so be it.

If this the case, then we shouldn't consider Malone or Dream to coach Yao either.

Why not? Yao could probably learn a lot from Ewing. As long as the tutoring isn't being conducted at Rick's, I can't see how any harm would be done.

Exactly, that's my point. Just being able to have any one of those 3 working with Yao on a DAILY basis would be great for Yao's development.

For the last year or so this BB (and me) has been complaining about Rudy's assistant coaches. I think we all wanted to bolster that part of the team. Having a big man like Ewing would be great to teach our post players!

Heck, maybe Griffin could actually LEARN some post moves and play more in the pivot instead of shooting 3ptrs!

Pat was not even in the same class as Dream. He was good, but he never was nor could have been the Dream. Even with the best teachers in the game. If you want to bring someone in, go after Dream, Malone, Russell, Walton, Sampson, before Ewing.

Boy we cannot complain about Ewing. His game and body speed is closer to Yao that that of the Dream. Because the dream lacked height he did alot of things on speed and footwork which Yao does not have or certainly not enough to justify that he grow his game in that direction. Based on my recollection, Ewing has all the low-post moves in the book, including the sky-hook. I would unreservedly welcome Ewing.

College basketball is a bit different than pro ball because you have boosters and stuff but my guess is if NC had a coaching vacancy and coach K was willing to leave Duke, NC would listen. They would be fools not to. It would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

As a BUSINESSMAN you can't just not discount talent just because they have been rivals in the past if they can come in and improve your situation.

Where has Van Gundy said he'd bring Ewing along?
What is this "we" don't want NY coaches? Last time I checked Van Gundy was leading the poll and I'm sure that most Rockets would rather have him than anyone else we're looking at now.

1994 is long gone.......Patrick was a great player if he wants to come and help out Yao thats great. Theres better guys out there. But if Pats the best that can be brought in so be it. I dont care whom he played for if hes going to help the Houston Rockets than who cares about the past. Like I said 1994 is long gone all players from both teams from the finals are long gone. Both head coaches are in differnt places.Lets look ahead to the future. Pat can help Yao, Why deny Yao help when it is offered?
