This is baffling to me. You don't find that much of a difference between the personalities? John Lopez could literally (figuratively) make your ears bleed if you listen long enough. I don't know if he's a good writer or not (don't remember) but he is absolutely without a doubt the worst radio personality I've ever heard. I'd rather listen to Jim Rome, Rich Lord, Dr. Ruth, Adam Clanton, of even Larry in Stafford than to listen to that guy. It's bad. REALLY BAD.
Listening to Lord right now and reaffirming that as bad as Lopez is, I'd take him over Lord anyday. MattJ is good enough to keep me listening but if 1560 ever got a decent drive home show that might change.
He discusses sports. Does he do it in an annoying way occassionally? Sure. More than occassionally? Likely. Still, I'd rather listen to someone somewhat annoying discussing sports, and Houston sports, than listen to a commercial, or celebrity birthdays or some other random crap, or a sports story i have no interest in.
This morning he had a giggle fest about the Catholic Church and the Sistine Chapel. Sports. Riiiiiiiight.
I'm okay with the radio guys talking about non sports stuff, general hot topics, and pop culture stuff. But they have to be entertaining and engaging. John Lopez is neither of those. I find Ken Hoffman and David Nuno more entertaining to listen to then JLo. I actually like listening to Hoffy and Nuno. Lopez, not so much.
Well the reason I made this topic is because I was FORCED to listen this morning. I had no choice. The location I was at had 610 playing and I had no control over the radio. Because of that, I was put in the life threatening position of listing to Lopez for about 30 minutes or so. The good news is that the experience convinced me to buy life insurance.
My theory is: if you're going to be a sports radio host in a city...you ought to AT LEAST be neutral towards the teams in that city. If you're fan, your listeners can relate to that, provided you don't go homer on them. But you shouldn't have an axe to grind with the franchises locally...or at least you shouldn't make it sound continually like you do. And that's John Lopez.
I remember listening to Lord hosting Rockets Wrap after Rockets games. He did it solo. It was painful. I don't think he's as horrific as people make him out to be when he's paired with someone. He's not very good but he's far from the worst I've ever heard on the Houston airwaves. I've been listening to 610 at work via my iPhone for a couple of days, and the shows have been tolerable so far.
