Extreme views for narrow minded people.

Guns are made to do two things, intimidate, or kill. Neither of these things are positive.

Australia may be going through some problems with gun control, but that is to be expected, it will calm down, and they will be better off because of it.

What do you gun totten people tell the parents of kids slain at Columbine?

As for our fore fathers..give me a break, they had MUZZLE LOADING...single shot...ball shooters.

Simply put guns have advanced far beyond what they envisioned.

    Ignorance knows no bounds.....

I really do not appreciate the slap-in-the-face comment. If you don't like the topic, stay out.

That statement is naive as it comes. Lets see, if this country is so much better, then why do we have so many more people killing themselves now? Oh, I know, its the sheer enjoyment of living in this great time where we face stress at work, pollution in out-of-control measurements, talks of global warming, running out of fossil fuels for a technogly, gangs/people killing eachother in masses ... im sure I could go on.
I would much rather living back 150 years ago, other than i would not have all my technology gadgets.

This statement is just plain dumb. If more people like you would respect a gun, then perhaps kids would not be killing themselves, much less killing others.

I don't own a gun and I do not plan on in the immediate future. I do not call myself a pansy.

But I WILL raise my kids around guns and teach them how to use one and RESPECT them.

This is a far more naive statement. Your life expectancy in 1850 would've been about 45 to 50 years assuming you didn't fight in the Civil War.

Nevermind pollution and gang violence, try cholera and smallpox assuming you actually lived through childbirth.

No era is perfect. They all have their problems. It is naive to believe that ANY era is some magical place where we all are (or will be) better off and that the rules 150 years ago can apply in the same way we apply them today.

    1) Im not gun totten
    2) Keep a better grasp of your childrens life. Im not blaming it on the parents, but when a parent says, "I didn't see this coming", what do you expect ... they've had their eyes shut for quite a long time.
    3) Im sure after this incident, many kids were relived from being bullied around by all those 'jocks'

What is naive about this statement? I gave an opinion on which era i would prefer to live in, I didn't state it was better. Like you said, every era in time is going to have its problems.

First you say extreme views for narrow minded people and then you ask a really loaded narrow minded question. As if responsible gun ownership had anything to do with Columbine. A hostile out of control school environment and lack of parental supervision was responsible for Columbine, not "gun totten" people.

    Space Ghost,

Puedlfor was talking about this quote of Roxran's:
The last time I checked neither the Old Testament or New Testament confronted the gun control issue. Assuming you're a Christian from many of your other posts, I think that you would agree that there is no 'god given right' per se.

Actually, reading your other posts... perhaps you won't agree with this statement. [IMG]

Since 99.9995% of the time that conservatives address the death penalty issue they go on emotion and say "what if it was your wife or child" I'm going to appeal to emotion here. Take a poll of all of the parents of recently slain children and ask them what should be done with guns.

Sorry BK, I took the easy way out of an argument. [IMG]

If the push me, maybe I'll try to come up with something a tad more logical.

    mrpaige,

I think you're the closest I'm going to get, so I'll take it. [IMG]

Just kidding, you're one of the three or four conservatives on the site whose opinions I pay attention to (dc, you, bk, etc... no offense to the others that I forgot).

Since Roxran suggests everyone owning AKs and Space Ghost drops the occassional inflammatory post I needed to make sure that there are normal gun owners/gun advocates out there.

Come to think of it, I wonder if I should ask if there are normal gun owners out there rathern than gun advocates. It's easy to theorize that gun ownership is okay. It's a different issue to actually go and buy a gun.

If you live in say . . . . . LEBENON, Iraq, Isreal would you support having the guns removed

Who knows. The point is we don't live there and laws that are relevent there may or may not be here.

If we FELT more threatened by Mexico or Cuba would we be all about a NO GUN POLICY

Besides, do you really think your handgun is going to stop an opposing army's tanks, armored personnel carriers, jets, and missiles?

Thank you Mr. Heston! If I'm a pansy for not carrying a gun, so be it! Sorry if I don't want to carry something that takes a life! Something that completely disturbed me though was this comment:

This is the kind of stuff that just freaks the hell out of me. I know you didn't mean it this way, but how many people said what you said, and how many Police Officers paid for it with their lives? It will cost you your life!?

While I agree that was a narrow question, my point is valid.

I am a staunch conservative, on most issues, but Gun Control is not one of them.

What is wrong with limiting WHO has a gun? There should be a waiting period, background check, and a stricter enforcement of gun laws as they exist today.

The problem with Guns is that they are FAR to accessible to EVERYONE.

The 2nd amendment is outdated, and should be changed. Our forefathers did not envision AK-47s when they wrote the constitution, and I doubt if the constitution was written today we would have the same 2nd amendment.

I'll tell you what I WOULD go for, put it to a vote of the people, let us decide, and I will agree to go on whatever side the majority falls.

I think that most sane people would agree with some type of gun control.

Common sense is all I am asking for...

Guns make loud noises and hurt my ears. Whimper...I am a sissy. [IMG]

I have had a gun pulled on me three times. These are the reasons:

    1. I am white. Apperently that is not so good.

    2. Some guy was f*cked up and wanted to know "where the party was." I did not tell him (knowing he was psychotic) so he pulled a gun and started yelling.

    3. A group of about 6 guys in a little car pulled up to a gas station cuz they thought they saw my friends and me "throwin gang signs" and were ready to take us out.

I am sure you are all dying to know if I survived...

    1. I stood there, smiled walked away.
    2. I stood there, did not smile, and he drove away (I must admit, it was late, i did not have glasses or contacts in so could not see everything -- just wonded my friends had all ducked for cover!).
    3. Talked my way out of it, despite a friend making matters worse "what gang do you think we are with?" Idiot.

A fourth time I was shot at while driving away in a car -- not really relevant here. [IMG]

I think I saw someone get shot, but am not really sure -- another driving away thing. My friend's house was involved in a drive-by. No other gun stories i can think of...

Anyway, I think guns are silly. I do not need any. Ideally I would like to have fewer around. I do not buy the guns make people safer thing. Criminals are probably better at using them in night-time situations. [IMG]

Oh yeah, I have an acquantance who broke into someone's house with a gun -- no intent to use it because he knew the owner was gone. Anyway, the owner was a big NRA guy, huge gun collection. He came home early, saw something fishy, brought a gun in and started firing. This acquaintance of mine is on death row after firing back and killing the owner (who wounded an accomplice). Had the owner not had the gun, he would be alive.

Two lives would have been saved.

I think Space ghost should star his own utopia so that he may live in the glory years mid-nineteenth century US. Then he could live when men were men and women were baby factories and blacks were not real humans. [IMG]

They probably didn't envision rap music or all of the sex and violence that's on TV every night either. Maybe we should change the 1st amendment too.

That's funny. My first reaction was that two lives would have been saved had your punk friend (acquaintance) not broken into the guy's house. I guess we just have a different way of looking at things.

To me, nothing is wrong with limiting access to guns, if it were possible. You can only limit access to legally purchased firearms, however. This isn't where all the crime comes from.

Can anyone honestly argue for banning guns after reading stuff like this?

    Acehbe, thank you. [IMG]

I do own a handgun, which I keep unloaded with a trigger lock on. Yes, I did get it partially with self defense in mind. But, I also got it because I wanted to know how to safely handle and use a firearm. My father had a few guns; I have several friends who are police officers or have firearms for other reasons, and I never really felt comfortable handling or being around them. Having owned a gun, fired it, maintaining it, and been responsible for storing it, I feel more comfortable around them. I also found an experienced gun owner to teach me how to safely use it.

I feel most of the accidents with guns aren't caused by people owning guns, but from them not acting as responsible owners. If a gun is maintained, treated with respect, and stored properly, it should be safe. When people play with them, or leave them where children have access to them, they aren't being responsible.

I can't argue that guns don't have the potential to injure or harm -- no one can. But, it is interesting how people treat firearms differently. Think about it. If someone leaves a car running, with the engine on, and a child in it, and the child puts it in gear and has an accident, we blame the person who left the car unattended. If someone allows their child to play in the garage, and they cut themselves on the lawnmower blade, we blame the parents for not supervising the child. If someone leaves a gun loaded, in a drawer, and a child gets hurt, we blame the gun -- or the parents for even having a gun. Gun owners have to take responsibility, and not place them in an unsafe situation.

As for the laws, I don't have any problem with background checks or waiting periods -- in fact, private sales should follow the same standards. I think the government should enforce the laws it has -- and doesn't currently enforce -- before dreaming up new laws to respond to the problem. I would like to see every gun sold with a trigger lock -- they are cheap and effective, and if people have them, they will probably use them.

I do think it is important for all firearm owners to learn how to properly use, maintain, and store their guns. I would like to see some kind of guidelines -- understandable by non-lawyers -- telling in one place exactly what the rights and responsibilities of owners are. It would also be great to have uniform standards for some type of gun safety class, to give owners the opportunity to learn how to be safe.

The government should take a look at licensing gun owners -- even though it may not be the best solution. We license drivers, and as a part of that process, provide standards for training, a test to evaluate a basic understanding of the regulations, and identification. Gun licenses might be a little inconvenient, but would give officers a good tool for enforcement. It could even eliminate the need for a waiting period -- since owners would be 'pre-approved.'

We require people to have a license to drive, hunt, or fish -- but not to buy a gun, carry a gun to the firing range or carry a rifle in their car.. While it probably wouldn't preclude ownership, it could at least provide standards for gun owners to follow, and give them incentive to treat their firearm(s) more responsibly -- for fear of loosing them.

There are a lot of different reasons people would have guns, maybe when I have a few hours, I'll go into them. To say they have no real positive purpose isn't exactly true, and isn't a good argument. The same point could be made about a lot of things, like motorcycles, fishing poles, bungee jumping cords, pizza, beer, or Compaq Center hot dogs (which absolutely have no purpose other than to maim or injure). [IMG] Different activities appeal to different people, and as a country, we tend to accept people for their diversity.

Groups fighting the topic are hurting everyone. The NRA, for example, is an organization who's main purpose -- promoting gun safety -- could be enormously helpful, and key to developing a safer environment -- if they didn't spend all their time fighting every gun regulation and suggestion. On the other hand, they have a legitimite fear that opposite groups would grab any concession they made and demand more. It would be nice if people could come together and work to find a workable solution that everyone could live with, and would make our country a little safer.

The difference between a gun and a car is that a car is made for transportation, a gun is made to kill. Granted the lawnmower accident is something bad to, but again that is made to cut grass. Accident happens, even with innocent things. People choke on food. But the major difference between those is that you can't get rid of those things because they tend to be necessities, a guns sole purpose is to injure and kill. It maybe used to "protect", but the bottomline is that it is made to kill or injure. That is why people blame a gun.
