Why would anyone need an assault rifle?? I have yet to see someone give a legit reason in this whole thread.

There isn't one, nor is there one for the extended clips that allowed more shootings in the Giffords example.

When I get drunk in my back yard and decide to shoot cans while on my riding lawn mower, it is really inconvenient to have to pull the trigger continually.

but but but the left thinks they can do it better

they always think they can do it better than historical facts

and if you give them an inch, they WILL want the whole yard eventually..and thats a historical fact

    WHAT?
The right talking about the left going against historical facts?
The entire premise of the right is to ignore history. Gold standard? Didn't work. Austerity? Didn't work. Guess what, the right doesn't care.
And let's not get started about religion. Historical fact and mythological religion don't mix.

If it was legal to own a nuke would that be ok? Our laws need to change to keep crazies from destraoying mass amounts of of lives very quickly. When it's your son or daughter gunned down by one of these fools you might change your hard headed mind.

If your concern is really the mentally challenged and disturbed owning guns, you should not clamor for more gun laws, you should clamor for enforcement of the ones we already have.

If your concern is engaging multiple targets accurately at medium range, the assault rifle is an appropriate tool to use. It is also helpful if you are not an excellent marksman to have a high capacity magazine, because you have more opportunities to score hits. There is a reason that every military in the world equips it's front line infantry with them.

Firearms can be very specialized to specific functions (like a large caliber sniper's rifle) or can try to be a jack of all trades and do many things well without excelling in a particular area in order to accomplish a more general task like that described in the paragraph above, like assault rifles.

Thats right, all of us need to carry guns. The government should make it mandatory for all citizens to carry guns. If you cant afford it then the government will provide assistance for you to carry a gun. Its one thing to carry a gun and quite another to be able to keep your head and return fire in a crowded place. Or are you suggesting that we make military service mandatory? How many normal people you know that don't have law enforcement/military training have been in a gunfight?

another facter of "assault rifles" is the ability of the .223 to fragment moreso than other bullets and not overpenetrate walls that may kill innocent bystanders. The evil person used a .223 rifle and there were reports of stuff coming out of the other wall (shrapnel) but a vast majority of the rounds fragmented before being lethal on the other side. A pistol round or shotgun round is more likely to overpenetrate hard objects and keep traveling thru the wall.

The AR15 is perhaps the best choice for CQB. more accurate which lessens collateral damage. low penetrative ability compared to what is else available while being very lethal due to the frag. on soft bodies. In addition, it can defeat the body armor the crazies sometimes wears....
and please for the love of all that is wholey- it's magazines, not clips (only the WW2 M1 Garand held "clips") and please know what "automatic" means versus semi-auto you knuckleheads

I am for the extensive gun regulation that is current, but completely against any further ban or regulation. In a temporary social breakdown ala New Orleans, Katrina, the AR-15 will be my best friend and is a great choice for home defense

The AK types are the opposite. Big time penetration thru hard objects, not as accurate. I wouldn't consider one for home defense either but each of us is different in views

My buddy built an AR-15 and we're going to go shoot it pretty soon -- it's really cool. I just don't see how you can ever outlaw an 'assault weapon' because the crazy dudes will figure out ways to get these weapons illegally anyway or they will just figure out other weapons to use.

Yea they are great. I'll give you guys permission to ban all assault rifles- just exempt the AR-15 - when you do the research, it is the one rifle worthwhile for home defense compared to the others
