And Harry Potter is just a kid's book, right? Don't get all pissy and elitist over a video game. Do you go around to karaoke clubs and tell people there to take singing lessons? Gotta be consistent, right? BTW, I play drums, and I'm not upset at the least over Rock Band's drum kit. The more people who get into drums, the better, I say.
If it leads them to getting a drum set and actually trying to play, then I agree with you. At least people in karaoke bars are actually singing. Never read Harry Potter, so I wouldn't know.
more disappointing than anything. im not saying there is anything wrong w/ guitar hero or video games in general - far be it from me to tell others how to spend their free time, but my cousin was progressing nicely on the guitar (thanks in no small part to me ) and had even gotten a strat and little practice amp, but now spends more time "practicing" guitar hero than the real thing.
You call that singing? I have no statistics to back it up, of course, but I would think that the rise of Guitar Hero has persuaded players to pick up the real guitar and learn to play. For instance, I have an old guitar sitting in my closet, collecting dust, and Guitar Hero has rekindled my interest in picking it up again. (Because, damnit, I must complete the drums-piano-guitar trifecta!)
Point well taken re: Karaoke... If GH leads to people taking up the actual instrument, then that's great.
I agree. I just find GH kind of silly, that's all. It's beyond a mere computer game. It's virtual un-reality, to me. Call me old-fashioned...wouldn't be the first time, and won't be the last, I'm sure. Sure glad the Texans are getting their butts kicked so I can sit in my home office and post in this thread!
Pretty soon we're gonna have all these great guitarists and, when asked the question "What was your first guitar experience?", we're gonna have to listen to the "I started out playing on Guitar Hero" and then went with a fender practice amp/guitar combo. Here I am today playing EVH style without ever having practiced a scale. Sigh!
Completely untrue. You may not be learning actual chords but you learn rhythm and coordination. Guitar Hero is a fun game and will get more people interested in trying the real thing. Which is why the latest installment of Guitar Hero has most of your favorite bands who actually gave permission to the game to use their original recordings (after the 1st 2 were just mostly cover songs) Because they understand that 1.) They'll be getting more exposure. 2.) They're getting paid for it. and maybe somewhere along the bottom of the list they either love the game themselves (a lot of them do) and like to see more kids getting into playing the guitar by hearing the classics mixed with some of the newer stuff. Personally I tried to play guitar many years ago but found it kind of boring and couldn't get into it. But after playing guitar hero it does kind of make me want to go take some lessons and learn how to really play.
Just about any video game teaches coordination. Rhythm? I guess, but so does Dance Dance Revolution. It doesnt translate to actually playing guitar though.
You know what drives me crazy? Kids who buy the Tony Hawk skating games and don't even own a skateboard ! OMG ! And don't even get me started on people who play racing games and have never owned a Ferrari.
Thats pretty funny considering I kicked all my Skater friends' asses at the original Tony Hawk but couldn't hardly stay on a skateboard.
Soon, we will no longer need guitars.....it will all be one big video game. BWAAAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH ! DD
Once you unlock Slash on this game, why would you want to play as any other character? Never thought he would be just as kick ass now as he was back in '86
Actually, I saw some nerds who had a band made up of Guitar Hero guitar players who tapped into the fake guitar controller and made the buttons control their own sounds using their own software. Therefore, they were actually playing their own music on fake guitars. Yes, it was pretty gay except if you were one of them...in which case it is the coolest thing evah. lol
That was actually the reason I bought a real guitar to begin with. After playing GH1 I was like I might as well try the real thing. But I did not take playing real guitar seriously until I saw SRV Live at Macambo. I picked up my GH3 copy yesterday though and as fun as it is, it will NEVER come close to being as fun as playing real guitar with friends. Nothing compares.
I've always wondered what it was about the "real" guitarists that made them so elitist as to not be able to tolerate Guitar Hero's popularity without snide comments. I mean, as others have pointed out before, many sports games don't even closely mirror the skills and abilities you need to excel in that sport in reality, but they are still popular and fun. However, I don't remember seeing Madden threads degrade into discussions between the "real" football players and the wannabes. It's just people enjoying a video game. But every single Guitar Hero thread I have seen seems to go down this road. Is it because the actual guitarists are just naturally more territorial over their domain? I can't seem to figure it out, but it is definitely a pattern.
