I noticed a cpl years ago, the whole if you can't beat him, join him approach kicked in, he started complaining a lot more, Phil Jackson style. Really it's the best way to influence the league, even Doc Rivers started doing it.
I agree but at the same time you can't expect him to say he's pleased all the time, our team has a lot of work to do. I think he's respected by all but if the players ever get tired of him it'll show quickly.
I think Adelman is of the opinion his team has a legitimate shot to do well this season, and he wants to get off to a good start. A difficult pre-season travel schedule could hurt the squad's chances.
Exactly. The endless travel and resulting lack of practice time is just killing him, because he knows they need the ****ing practice! He has a complex offense, and they desperately want to get back to being a good defensive team which also requires a lot of practice. And he needs a freakin' contract extension, Les.
Nice thread, very entertaining posts and I had a good time reading the posts while lmao. This is what is so great about CF, terrific sense of humor by many members coupled with great smarts.
From today's Chron. Yep, he sounds a little grumpy: Sounds like He's upset that the players went to the Greal Wall. LOL. They are in China for Crissakes. What does he expect? link
maybe just because his work is too heavy. with Yao or without YAO, it is completly different strategy, meanwhile, Yao is changing so many terrible kids should setup, if not they will be crying all night.
I don't think it's that at all. I think it's the constant travel, the appearances, the lack of practice time and the thing that matters most, BASKETBALL. It's far to hectic when you're doing all you can to get the team ready to start the season.
I'd say you're probably right, but remember last year he was really running his mouth off about the schedule and all the travel and back to backs. I think this has been happening for more that this year. I also wouldn't be so quick to say he's on his way out. I think that like most other things regarding the Rockets, it all depends on Yao Ming. Whether he can play like he used to (which we have seen he can, but can he continue it for an extended period of time?), whether he gets a new contact w/ the Rockets or not, etc. Unfortunately IMO it all hinges on Yao. Hopefully he comes through.
LOL at Aldeman for referring to the "Wall" as if the players were going to the local mall. So casual. I am sure he meant no disrespect.
- Talent laden without the matching chemistry for now - Spending time overseas that his team cannot afford - High expectations with Yao and additions/subtractions to the roster - Renewal of contract probably hinges on this season - Possibly too many players and not enough minutes - His primary C rotation is gimpy at-the-moment I probably missed a few but, he has some legitimate concerns for now. I've been watching RA since the Blazer days and he's never been the cheery type. Although admittedly, i haven't heard him as vocal about it as he is now.
He's a classic under-promise, over-deliver guy and he stands up for his players, while at the same time good-naturedly ribbing them. It's just his style, just like Phil Jackson has a style where he plays those mind games, and Doc Rivers has a jovial, friendship-type relationship with his players, etc. The players know he's got their back, and they respect him; that's all that matters, frankly.
Hoopsworld Link I think what people are perceiving as grumpiness is Adelman just voicing frustration about obstacles in the way of his #1 job right now, which is to get the Rockets ready for the upcoming season. The preseason is a time when the NBA sends teams all over the world to expand the global appeal of its product. As one of these travelling teams, the Rox lose workout time, practice time and the coaching staff subsequently has less information on which to base their evaluations. I can see why adelman would be frustrated with losing this time. We have an incredibly deep team with new players (and minute constraints) compared to last year. Grumpy old man or a guy just frustrated with trying to do his job while being forced to give up work time for the marketing of the rox and NBA? I remember the Lakers saying after they won their championship that their preseason Euro tour was great for team chemistry. as far as im' concerned though, i bet team chemistry is alot better when you're winning games and winning the playoffs, which begins with adequate preseason preparation.
I think Coach Adelman is a really good coach he is just getting around that age were he is very unimpressed with pretty much anything and disgruntled. He is still a winner though and a very good coach, Although he doesnt seem like he would be much of a motivator. His coaching and management style is more of a "take ownership of your team" approach. He wants the leaders in the locker room to do the motivating within the team. Thats the way its been for the past 3 or 4 seasons with veteran guys like Battier, Hayes, and Yao around. I assume Adelman will be around for another year or two but Morey is probably wanting to see if he will retire first and maybe hand the keys to the car over to Elston Turner and the rest of the gang. If Morey decides to move on with another coach before Adelman is ready to retire, more than likely the whole gang will go with him. Adelman is at the age where retirement is probably coming very up in the next two years or so anyways. Maybe by that time we could hire Battier on as an assistant coach.
Maybe he and Les will get together at the end of the season and decide to "retire" Adelman like Rudy and JVG beforehand. Eric Musselman....c'mon Eric Musselman....
